Something is definitely different this year with regard to consecutive years/13 month rule. I called in this afternoon on my Morgan Stanley Plat and was offered 40k MR (or $400) for 3k spend in 3 months. I received a 50k MR no spend offer on this card at the end of December 2020, so it's been about 12 months and 8 days. Since it renewed at $550 for the final time, pretty easy justification to keep. Minimal spend in 2021.

I took an offer for 12.5k Skymiles on my Delta Gold in December and have put no spend on it yet. If I upgrade to the Platinum for a 15k bonus and then hit the spend do I get both or do I have to do one and then the other?
Yes I know there's a better bonus for opening a Plat directly but I don't want a new account on my CR and I have a 0% APR promo on the open account until June.

Contacted chat for P2:
Aspire 1st anniversary: 10k / $1k / 3mo
Schwab Platinum 1st anniversary: $150 statement credit
Declined both. Our Hilton FNA certs are stacking up unused and Amex nerfed the Schwab redemption, so these are getting closed if offers don’t improve after another retention attempt.

Amex Platinum (2 yrs) - Called with every intention to cancel as have hardly been traveling the last two years. Offered 40k points or $400 statement credit for 3k spend in 3 months. I accepted the points. Also required to keep the account open for 12 months or face clawback.

American Express retention offers (2022)
The thread has been split at year end. I have not yet copied over the Wikipost from the 2021 thread, because it contains datapoints back to 2015, and those may not be useful. Review here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showwiki.php?t=2035091 Any volunteers to edit out the pre 2020 entries if I copy it?

AF billed in early Dec 2021 for personal Platinum. Called/chat 3 different times to be told no offers. Attempted to close today via chat, was transferred to membership consultant (again) and just before closing, offered 55K MRs for $4K spend in 90 days. Took the offer and will reevaluate next year as I have the business Platinum also.

Retention offers acquired via chat today ("I'm considering cancelling xxx card, and I wanted to see if there were any retention bonuses available for the card"):
Business cards:
Business Platinum (opened 2/2020, minimal spend beyond MSR): $695 statement credit, no purchase necessary; accepted
Blue Business Plus (last retention bonus 11/2020, minimal spend in last year): $50 statement credit, no purchase necessary; accepted
Business Gold (opened 6/2021, minimal spend beyond MSR): $250 statement credit, no purchase necessary; declined
Personal cards:
Vanilla Platinum (opened 6/2018, first retention bonus 6/2019, last retention bonus 11/2020, $2500 spend in last year): 40k MR points for $3k purchases; accepted
Hilton No AF Card (had card for >5 years, last retention bonus 11/2020, <$200 spend in last year): 10k Hilton points for $1k purchases; declined
I have two logins ... one business and one personal. Once I acquired one retention bonus for a given login, I pretty much went down the list of other cards under the same login that were about due for a retention bonus in the same chat session. CSRs didn't seem to care. As long as "I was considering cancelling the card." 18-year Amex history.

Credit card signup bonuses offer the highest return you will find, so if I'm working on a signup bonus elsewhere, I'm a lot pickier. Otherwise, it's simply using the annual fee as a baseline and weighing the benefits. Or waiting for an upgrade offer (hopefully). If they offer a statement credit that cancels out an annual fee without purchase requirement, obviously that's a no-brainer.
Business Gold is a useless card after the signup bonus ... $295 annual fee for basically no benefits. $250 statement credit means I would still be paying $45 for nothing. However, you never close an Amex until one year has passed ... unless you want to be placed on their unofficial naughty list and risk future credit card applications/signups. I'll cancel this card when the AF hits in June/July 2022.
Hilton no-AF ... 10,000 points is worth about $50, so 8% return (10,000 bonus points + 3,000 points from the purchases to meet the $1000 spend) didn't quite move the needle for me when I'm working on other signup bonuses with a higher return (Chase Ink Cash, Capital One Venture X). Still hoping to get a targeted upgrade offer to the Aspire.

Interestingly, I called on Friday and the guy said there was nothing they could do and suggested downgrading.

Amex Plat 1st year retention: offered 55k/$4k via chat. accepted. $80k+ spend during 1st year. Not sure if I could have pushed for more. I previously received a retention on a different card (Biz Plat)--for $695 statement credit, and I'm surprised I haven't seen any DP for personal Plat covering the AF of $695.
