The Centurion® Lounge
Platinum and Business Platinum Card Members
U.S. Basic Platinum Card Members and Additional Platinum Card Members on the account and U.S. Basic Business Platinum Card Members and Additional Platinum Card Members on the account may bring up to two (2) guests per visit into locations of The Centurion Lounge in the U.S., at Hong Kong International Airport and at London Heathrow Airport for no per-visit guest fee (“Complimentary Guest Access”) through January 31, 2023. Effective February 1, 2023, Platinum Card Members, Business Platinum Card Members and Additional Platinum Card Members on the account will be charged a $50 fee for each guest (or $30 for children aged 2 through 17, with proof of age). To receive Complimentary Guest Access at these locations after January 31, 2023, the total eligible purchases on the Platinum Account must equal or exceed $75,000 between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022 and in each calendar year thereafter. Guest access policies may vary internationally by location and are subject to change.
Beginning February 1, 2023, eligibility for Complimentary Guest Access will be processed within a week of the Platinum Account’s meeting the purchase requirement in most cases, but may take up to 12 weeks to become effective. Complimentary Guest Access status will be reflected in the Benefits tab of your online account and in the American Express App. Once effective, Complimentary Guest Access will be available for the remainder of the calendar year in which it became effective, the following calendar year, and until January 31 of the next calendar year (for example, if Complimentary Guest Access becomes effective on May 1, 2023, it will remain effective through January 31, 2025). Eligible purchases made by any Additional Card Members on the Platinum Account will contribute to the purchase requirement. Eligible purchases to meet the purchase requirement are for goods and services minus returns and other credits. The Platinum Card Member must present his or her valid American Express Card, government-issued I.D., and same-day corresponding airline ticket to club ambassador. Additional Gold Cards and Additional Green Cards on your Platinum account are not eligible for complimentary access. Access to Delta Sky Club partner lounges is not permitted. Individuals must be at least 18 years of age to access Delta Sky Club, and 21 years of age to access locations with a self-service bar, unless accompanied by a responsible, supervising adult who has access to the lounge. Priority Pass Select
These Terms and Conditions govern Platinum Card Members' participation in and use of the Priority Pass™ Select program. Priority Pass is an independent airport lounge access program. At any visit to a Priority Pass Select lounge that admits guests, you may bring in two guests for no charge. After two guests, you will be automatically charged the guest visit fee equal to the guest visit fee of the Priority Pass Standard program for each additional guest. Some lounges do not admit guests. By enrolling in Priority Pass Select, you agree that you will be responsible for any additional accompanying guest visits and that your Card will be automatically charged after you have signed for the additional guest visit and it has been reported to Priority Pass by the participating lounge. Additionally, you acknowledge and agree that American Express will verify your Card account number and provide updated Card account information to Priority Pass. Priority Pass will use this information to fulfill on the Priority Pass Select program and may use this information for marketing related to the program. I actually found HKG to be the least crowded of the lounges I regularly visited, though I may be biased as SFO and SEA were also regulars on the list. I'm not sure they have much room/space to expand their HKG footprint - they'd have to either relocate or encroach upon the Cent area, both of which seem non-ideal.

I just don't understand why AmEx goes to these extreme solutions for addressing the crowding problem. First they have a "generous" guest policy (2 free guests) but then reduce benefit for usage on arrival (which is useful for road warriors) and now they completely remove guest access. Why can't they just give you X passes in a year for guests (and they can tie it with the primary member being there so there's no "selling" of passes). That seems like the most obvious way to avoid crowding.
The first Centurion lounge opened in Las Vegas in 2013 and was initially pay for entry for any but Centurion Cardmembers. Here's a quote when the Las Vegas lounge first opened:
"Any eligible American Express Cardmember may purchase a one-day Access Key at the Lounge for $50. If you hold a Centurion Card from American Express, or if you received a promotional mailing with an Access Key, access to The Centurion Lounge is complimentary. Purchase of one-day Access Keys is subject to Lounge capacity."
The Platinum Card annual fee was increased to $450 in 2007. Long before the Centurion Clubs were an idea much less a Platinum benefit.
The lounges were never built or intended to have the type of volume they're seeing. Most have reached capacity and are turning people away at peak times.

Any news from non-US Platinum cards as yet? Given crowding is mainly a US thing, I guess there's a reasonable chance they'll overlook the rest of us (we have significantly worse benefits in general), though I hope they implement that correctly in the US Centurion lounges.
We pay more already, 700 Euro, and we only get to add one extra platinum card holder, with no option to pay more for a 3rd or 4th.

As previously posted the planned original Amex Centurion Lounges had a per visit fee except for Centurion card holders. I think this will be pushed back again. The funny thing is the Amex ideal target customer already has lounge access via biz or first class tickets. As for all of you folks I just have one thing to say that makes an airline lounge far more valuable than any Centurion lounge. IROP Once you have experienced an IROP and your elite status phone number is overloaded the airline lounge outshines any Centurion lounge.

I appreciate the concern for reducing crowding. 2 free guests is excessive. Entire families kill the experience. Tons of friends and colleagues do too, to a lesser extent. This is too much though.
Now I couldn't even bring in my SO unless I pay $50 each time? At that point, I'm almost better off getting a table at a restaurant and ordering a meal of my choosing, or considering options externally of the airport. A huge devaluation on top of the rumored AF increase. No amount of free socks at Saks helps that. While it is their choice to make, I wonder why it couldn't have been an approach to cut guests to 1 first and see what the impact is. I suppose if they can still come in under an AU card, that's a bit more reasonable. The price and restrictions are starting to outweigh the benefits for more and more people though. I guess that is the goal.

It seems to me AMEX is also trying to limit children in the lounge.
For example, a family of four can access the lounge by paying the primary card membership fee plus the authorized user fees for the other three family members. However, an authorized user must be over 13 years of age in order to become an AU on an AMEX card. Therefore, parents with small children cannot add them as authorized users and will be forced to pay the daily visit fee.
I don’t mind paying for authorized users, but don’t penalize families who would prefer to relax in the Centurion Lounge family rooms rather than at the McDonalds near gate C8.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I absolutely welcome Amex making it difficult for kids to get in. In my opinion, a child doesn't have any business being in a lounge. I lost count pre-pandemic of the amount of times I was disturbed by a child running amok in a Centurion.

While losing all guest privileges does seem very excessive, I appreciate what AMEX is trying to do here. The lounges I've encountered, even in Covid, have still been extremely crowded. This is certainly related in part to the limited seating being employed in the lounges, but the crowds are still there and it's only going to get worse as travel ramps up again. And, from my personal experience, the crowding mainly comes from groups, usually families. It's the cardholder bringing in their spouse and 4 kids that contributes to the bulk of the crowding, not the cardholder bringing in his or her business partner.
I think there are more nuanced ways to accomplish this though. Allow one guest per cardholder and then charge for each additional guest, no exceptions. Want to bring your 4 kids in the lounge? Fine, then pay for them, like anyone else would have to if they wanted to bring 4 people in the lounge. There could even be a reduced fee ($25) for people under 18. Or just give each cardholder a set number of guest passes each year. But denying members the ability to bring in one guest a few times a year is overkill to me.
