Effective February 1, 2023, Platinum Card Members, Business Platinum Card Members and Additional Platinum Card Members on the account will be charged a $50 fee for each guest (or $30 for children aged 2 through 17, with proof of age). This is purely a money move. No, Amex is not interested in reducing crowdedness as some road warriors claim. Thanks to the new policy, My Delta reserve friends and their AUs now all have access to Centurion Lounges. Trust me, when travel is back to normal, they will crowd the lounges way more than some kids on family trips.

As you are probably aware delta reserve only lets you use centurion lounges if you fly delta and AU is $175 each
I bet most of the customers in the centurion lounges are and will continue to be platinums and their AU’s at $ 175 for 3 cards
There is no airline restriction with plat and centurion lounges which gives it a leg up on the delta reserve card

Color me surprised that the resident TPG Queen of Entitlement is writing open begging letters to Amex to roll this back.

Whle it will make am ex some more money it could cut down on crowding. When the Skyclubs made the changes to Am Ex swipee charging visitors a few years ago it helped out with the lounge crowding quite a bit. One of the benefits I like about my Platinum card over my reserve is I can guest people into the Am Ex lounge since you can't guest people in on your reserve card.

I don't think the Rserrve card access will cause much problems with crowding anyway seeing you have to be flying Delta to access the club and Vegas is the only airport where I'll be taking advantage of that since they don't have a skyclub and it's covenient to the Delta gates in LAS.

Do they all have special purple DL Reserve hats so we can easily spot them? I know we'll never know, but I'd be curious the cross utilization because with the exception of JFK*, there's really little overlap with the DL hub network. Sure you'll get some O/D pax but I doubt it'll be any kind of critical mass. As has been debated ad nauseum, a large part of why there are no Centurion Lounges at Delta hubs is because Plats already have lounge access there when flying DL.

*and before people jump on me: LGA, yes a DL hub but the CL was purposefully placed in the terminal DL didn't operate from; SEA, the SkyClub is better than the CL anyway; SFO, MIA, LAX... DL is not airside connected to the CL.

Assuming that all kids are rascals is the assumption of someone who doesn't have kids.

Any child whose parents are raising him with any degree of attention is not going to cause any problems in an airport lounge. The kids who cause problems in an airport lounge are more likely to be kids of high net-worth parents who didn't want to bring the nanny along.

The solution is not to ban kids. It's to ban adults who are too selfish and/or irresponsible to supervise their own kids.

I think @Mia Has the data on the numbers of AmEx Platinum cardholders, and possibly AmEx Centurion cards and Delta Reserve. I believe the cardholder base is large....

I 100% agree with this. I know a lot other FT members here are afraid to speak up, except just a couple of us.

We are not born to be 40-55 years old. We may choose not to have kids, but we were all kids when we started. Think about the days when you could not get into airport lounges with your own parents. Or your father went to the bar and leave your mom and you alone outside....

When we share a table with a young family, I feel very happy to see a suckling baby in sweet sleep. Or toddlers, teens etc. Maybe we were just lucky. But I've seen some unruly adults who speak really loudly at the bar stand. They make more noise than the kids. Parents can control their kids. But no one can control those adults.

I'm glad that some AmEx lounges have kid corners. I hope all of them do. That won't solve the over-crowding situation. But that will make everyone happy.

The change is about two years away. AmEx has a lot of reckoning to do. No matter what, this change won't affect me since we hold more Platinum cards than we need for lounge purpose.

The fundamental issue is the fact that AmEx issues too many Platinum cards than it can accommodate. I've seen this happening at gym membership and some other places. Anyone can get a Platinum card by paying the AF.

I actually don’t care if kids are in the lounge or not. I’ve never experienced unruly children in an airport lounge. My problem isn’t kid related, it’s my full fare paying butt not having a seat because someone’s not full fare paying guests are in them.

I would think an even better policy would be to define peak times and allow no guests whatsoever during those time periods. But that puts no money in AMEX’s pocket.

The "struggle of the traveling mom" who can afford travel and a Centurion is probably not going to see much empathy from the plus one and road warrior crowds. Surely, the road warrior gods would agree us plus oners are the lesser of two evils?

All I am saying is that the policy won't thin the crowd given Delta Reserve holders will join us pretty soon, especially at LAS and CLT where there are no sky clubs.

If Amex really cares about reducing crowd, there could be a reservation system with confirmed ticket information. The other way is to limit the time in the lounge and have a credit card "swipe in and swipe out" system (1st hour is free, 2nd hour charged $20, third hour is another $20 etc)

But if someone is bringing their kids in for free it is takking up seats. I remember back when Delta allowede either 2 guests or a spouse/partner and yunlimited nyumber of children in under either 18 or 21 with a individual membership or am ex swipe how that would be abused. I remember one time this boy scout troup must have been flying for a jamboree or some event and the scoutmaster was able to guest himself and another adult and five or six teen boys in. Another time a guy guested in his wife and four college age kids, two guys and two girls got guested in with him and the kids were obviously two couples and were drinking upstairs so either the skyclub attendant didn't do an age check and they were over 21 or they were drinking illegally.

I don't have an issue with kids getting guested in but they should have to pay if they are taking up a seat.

Seeing Platinum cardholders get in the skyclub I think it's only fair reserve card holders get the same benefit and I don't see it being that big of an issue except at clubs like LAS and CLT where there is no skyclub and an Am Ex located conveniently next to the Delta gates.

Problem with limiting the club to an hour or two is the times I am in a club for over an hour is one of the reasons I like having access to a skyclub or other lounge. There's been times I wanted to get on an earlier flight and only standby was available and I would get to the airport early if I was on the standby list not to clear and will go to the club and wait for my flight. I've had flights delayed five or six hours before in airports where there is really no place to go and they also don't want you toeave the airport if it's a MX issue they may be able to get fixed earlier or able to do an equipement or crew swap on. Hasn't applied to the Am Ex lounge but has to priority pass and Sky clubs for me is a long layover. Last time I came back from Lima there was an equipment issue that was easy to fix after boarding but once it was fixed it was past the curfew time to leave LIM and they wouldn't clear the plane and we were stuck on the ground all night and missed my connection home and the first flight they could get me home on out of ATL was eight hours later. Don't think it would have been fair if I had to pay for club use since that wasn't my fault and I thought about leaving the airport but carried on and didn't want to deal with having all my stuff with me and I also bought some Pisco at Duty Free and wouldn't have been allowed to reclear security without checking it.

The other solution would be charging kids reduced rate since they can't get their own Platinum cards anyhow. I can think about $20-$25 per child for anyone younger than 13. If AmEx charges $50 for each child, then it just says that families are not welcome. The cost for kids is much less than $50.

But no matter what changes AmEx makes, I do not think that is going to solve the over-crowding situation any time soon. The card base is just too large.

Some say to have a separate VIP room for Centurion cardholders. Sure if AmEx invests in more real estate.....

I think a much more fair change would be a handful of free guest passes per year. This way, you still get some included access, but not enough that Amex could feel you are "abusing" it or overcrowding the lounge. I think it's a little draconian to totally eliminate any included guests.

I guess Amex is really trying to weed out anyone beyond (typically solo) business travelers from having the card.

I am far from a business traveler, but you do realize many of us travel for leisure solo too, right?

I consider myself lucky when I get a girl to agree to a second date, having a perpetual +1 to the Centurion Lounge is a very long way off!

What does the reservation solve? That the early bird catches the worm? That's a complete miss of the root of the problem and you are potentially alienating your best customers.
