Effective February 1, 2023, Platinum Card Members, Business Platinum Card Members and Additional Platinum Card Members on the account will be charged a $50 fee for each guest (or $30 for children aged 2 through 17, with proof of age). For personal, I agree. I think it would be fairly easy for people with the business Platinum?

I wonder if companion access would be a retention benefit they would use? It wouldn't cost them anything.

So many mixed emotions with this change...
  1. Do I plan my trips that need a stopover with airports that have a CL only? - yes
  2. Did they need to do something to solve overcrowding - yes
  3. Is "no" free guests reasonable - from a private airline lounge, it's only for the seat holder, so I can see an argument both ways on this one
  4. Does this suck for me? Typically my travel is either with my wife (who has an AU card so no issue) or family of four with our two kids...
    1. Would I pay $100 in order to goto a Lounge? No way...as much as I hate most PP lounges would rather go there or a restaurant like some others have said
    2. Do I spend $75k/year on my card? - Every year without fail...so I can still bring my kids and wife gets in on her own
For me, it's a wash for most of my travel...this fall/next year I can see doing some guys trips to make up for 2020 and this may affect me then...but I would leave them to go relax in a CL

But their parents do. One reason I keep my JPMR card is the free UC membership. My kids love the UC and PP lounges and it’s a nice safe place for us to hang out before flights. I’m not paying $595 a year for Uber credits that I don’t want and airline credits that require me to jump through hoops.

Is there ever crowding at a UC? It's so basic and with minimal amount of food in there.

This can’t be it. So Amex platinum basically will become a Delta Reserve but without a free companion certificate.

But you are happy to pay $595 for 30 minutes with your kids and spouse in the lounge twice a year between flights?

Am young person (though out of college) - it's definitely a thing, just usually in private/has to be in the right circles. I got the Plat myself ~junior year of college and had a ton of friends who did the same.

Agreed - HKG has had my favorite F&B of any Cent. Maybe I just went at the right time!

I think this is really likely. You could almost think of this as a sales strategy for new cards if limited passes were given out and used on coworkers or business partners. I'd actually imagine that the portion who hit $75k are much larger than expected - there's a ton of non-FT folks out there who don't seek to optimize their spend across cards.

This kind of change is not aimed at getting rid of crowding in the Amex lounges, but people are free to imagine what they wish about that.

What should also be obvious is that this change is aimed at: 1) getting Amex Plat account customers to pay for more AU cards; and, even more importantly for Amex, 2) to try to drive up a massive increase in the amount of spend being put onto Platinum card accounts. Amex wants Platinum card customers to give the Platinum cards a lot bigger walletshare than the other cards in the proverbial wallet because the biggest Plat card-related revenue (and profits) for Amex come from revenue sources that are not its annual membership fees.

Right. Amex wants to force that 1x reward spend to the tune of 75k+, as opposed to someone juggling cards and maximizing benefits.

While most businesses approaches have multiple goals, when I look at the AMEX model, I see: increasing AFs, increasing partnerships and credits, premium perception, etc. Look at what was done with Centurion. You mean to tell me this is some grand plan to get more $75 AU cards for people to drive up 1x spend up to 75k to get guests in the lounge for free?

While we know they LOVE the 75K spenders who put everyone on, no one is stimulated to do so for a free lounge guest. It's is more to reward those 75k spenders. The Centurion experience has been watered down over the years with an influx of guests and shifting demographics. AMEX knows the patterns of its best customers and this is the message that they are catering to that crowd.

Try again. I have no kids right now but plan to at some point.

When I travel with them, I'm not using the airport lounge because I have common sense and consideration for other passengers.
