12/26/21: Got mad over illegitimate clawback of 6K MR points and threatened to close AMEX Plat.
Accepted retention offer of 40K points for $3k spend in the next 3 months (still pissed about the clawback though and will keep fighting it - spent 2 hours on hold and they are unable to even articulate what happened).
Annual spend this year was around $30K

Promo from earlier this year for additional 3,000 MR rewards for each $3k spent. Paid registration fee on new car + a few other small things and got 9,000 points. Clawed 6k back because I had "returns". Other than a $500 credit from Delta for a cancelled flight, no returns and AMEX customer support (escalated to supervisor) was unable to give any additional info or specify which "return" they were penalizing me for. Very unhappy.

It is very likely true that Customer Service doesn't understand the rules well enough to explain. American Express's system attaches the entire bonus to the specific transaction which happens to cross the spending threshold required to earn it. If there is subsequently a credit associated with that transaction it can cause the bonus to be reversed. I cannot explain why a single credit would cause 6,000, rather than 3.000, points to be deducted, but look carefully for other types of credits, even promotional credits that are not "returns".

I took the retention bonus but am not happy and am still very likely to cancel the Plat once I have gotten/spent the MR and used up all of my 2022 perks in the first quarter of 2022. Probably will cancel Delta AMEX plat then as well. Very unhappy with AMEX

Vanilla Platinum, about 2 or 3 weeks before 1st renewal, 55k offered for $4k spend. Accepted. I am going to get charged $695 in January.
I also have the 4x referral bonus, and a 20k for $2k spend on an AU bonus going, so I will be able to get 95,000 points for $4000 total spend :-)
Additionally, I have a $4k charge to make immediately and will be taking advantage of the $0 fee Plan It offer on the account...

Jan 2021 DP - signed up for schwab plat in dec 2020, then asked for vanilla plat retention in chat 1mo later. Was offered 20k with no spend and took it.
Today DP - Schwab Plat, after a couple lines of the typical "but the benefits are great" was offered 40k after 3k spend and took it.
