Amex Offer Post Date

Hello,

TL;DR: I am trying to complete an Amex Offer. The deadline is 12/27. If I purchase a gift card from Amazon and it lists as pending but doesn't get officially approved by Amazon until 12/28, will the purchase date be 12/28 (and I'll miss the offer) or 12/26 (because I purchased today)?

Details: I may have made an error and I'm SO ANNOYED if I did. I'm trying to complete an Amex Offer on my Marriott Amex. [Note: I'm posting here instead of Marriott forum because this is an Amex question more than it is a Marriott question.] I've included the terms at the bottom of this. Here is the actual offer:

Get 6 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points for each dollar spent on eligible purchases at Amazon, Target and Walmart after using your enrolled Card by 12/27/2020, up to $3,500. See terms.
I first attempted to see how much "natural" spend I'd have on my Amex. I knew I'd have some expenditures. I also set a reminder to myself on 12/25 to buy Amazon gift cards to cover the difference so I could max out this offer. It seems waiting this long was the problem. I ended up only hitting $600 in spend, so I have $2,900 left to go.

Yesterday, 12/25, I reloaded my Amazon gift card balance with the max ($2,000) and another $900 purchase. 45 minutes later, I received an email saying that they believe an unauthorized party accessed my account. They reset my password and canceled both orders.

I called Amazon. They told me to try again and that they're making relevant notes so it doesn't happen again. I reloaded my Amazon gift card balance again with $2,000 purchase and a $900 purchase. 90 minutes later, I received another email saying that they believe an unauthorized party accessed my account. They again reset my password and canceled both orders. UGH!!

I called Amazon a second time. They explained they would escalate my issue to an account specialist that would get back to me in 1-2 business days (i.e. they would get back to me on Monday, 12/28 or Tuesday, 12/29!). Ugh. I told them that wouldn't work. They didn't have another option.

I tried another idea: I reloaded my balance with only $500. That's been canceled as well, but this time it was silently in the backend. I didn't get a notification but I cannot see the order anymore.

I also figured out that maybe I could purchase gift cards. I purchased 3 $500 gift cards. I did this at night on 12/25. Serendipitously, as I was composing this here thread on 12/26, I got a call from them, inquiring about the $1,500. I approved it. Unfortunately, it's been 45 minutes and it still haven't been sent, the gift cards haven't been emailed, and my credit card hasn't been charged. I just logged into my account to see that it says "scheduled". I had "scheduled" them for "now" (which, for me, meant that they would be sent the night of 12/25). Ugh.

All of this to ask: any ideas on how to get my $2,900 in spend before the deadline tomorrow (12/27)?

Thanks for your help!

You will receive 6 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points for each dollar spent (for a total of 8 points) with your enrolled Card on eligible purchases at Amazon, Target and Walmart from the time you enroll through 12/27/2020 on up to $3,500 in total eligible spend. Must first add offer to Card and then use same Card to redeem. Only purchases made with your Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card or Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card are eligible. Limit 1 enrolled Card per Card Member across all American Express offer channels. Your enrollment of an eligible American Express Card for this offer extends only to the Basic Card Member. Offer is non-transferable. An “eligible transaction” means a purchase made with your enrolled Card on or before 12/27/2020. Offer valid only for purchases made with Amazon, Target and Walmart. Purchases with Amazon must be made at Amazon's US website or via the US Amazon mobile app. Purchases with Target must be made in-store at locations in the US, online at Target's US website or by using Target’s US mobile app. Purchases with Walmart must be made in-store at locations in the US, online at Walmart's US website or by using Walmart’s US mobile app. Amazon corporate gift cards and custom-designed gift cards are excluded. International sites owned and/or operated by Amazon or websites affiliated with/linked to/from Amazon, Amazon Go, Amazon Local, Amazon Mechanical Turk, Amazon Web Services, Amazon Home & Business Services, Amazon Currency Converter, Home Services, Prime Photos, Amazon Inspire, Amazon Video Direct, Amazon business, Amazon Global, and Amazon Drive are excluded. Walmart purchases made at an international version of the merchant's website are excluded. Online and in-store layaway, contact lens, photo services, recurring subscription services (for example, Beauty Box and Baby Box), insurance services, in store pharmacy transactions, auto services, protection plans, Walmart MoneyCenter, and Walmart Care Clinic are also excluded. Offer valid only on eligible purchases made and shipped within the U.S. Some merchants may not ship to all areas. See each merchant website for shipping policy. You may not receive the bonus points if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as eligible for the offer. For example, you may not receive the bonus points if (a) the Merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services; or (b) the Merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers); or (c) you choose to make a purchase using a third party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet. Purchases may fall outside of the offer period in some cases due to a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date you made the transaction (for example, the purchase date for online orders may be the shipping date). Note that we may not receive information about your qualifying purchase until all items from your eligible purchase have been provided/shipped by Merchant. Limit one enrolled Card per American Express Card online account. The enrolled Card account must be active, not be past due, canceled or have a returned payment outstanding to receive the bonus points. These bonus points are in addition to any points you would normally receive for purchases on your Card under the terms of the Marriott Bonvoy member account, but the number of bonus points you receive will be based on the purchase price after any credit or other discount is applied. Bonus points will be credited to your member account within 90 days after 12/27/2020, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase. We may not credit bonus points to, or we may take away bonus points that have been credited to, your member account if the qualifying purchase is returned or cancelled. Amex Offers are dynamic and personalized, so the offers you see may change. For questions regarding your Card Account, please call the number on the back of your Card. By adding an offer to a Card, you agree that American Express may send you communications about the offer. Amazon is not a sponsor of this promotion. ©2020 Marriott International, Inc. You have triggered an Amazon security algorithm, and they have told you the soonest it can be resolved. You should stop trying to outsmart their system, and buy from Target or Walmart, or simply let it go.

It sounds to me that you should let this go.

If you’re not willing to, I suppose you could go shopping at Target or Walmart and buy things.

I also suppose if you wanted to, you could return these items and insist on store credit instead of a refund to your credit account.

BUT, I also suspect if you are trying to maximize this benefit at $2,900 and insisted upon store credit in the amount of $2,900 at Target or Walmart they would get rather suspicious very quickly.

My suggestion is, as someone who participated in this promo, it isn’t that great a promo that it is worth dealing with FR, stores questioning practices sketchy enough to trigger Amazon algorithms, etc. Buy what you need, and don’t try to outsmart the promo gods over a relatively small amount of dollars saved (in the long run of a fruitful relationship with a CC company or store)

I am confused why you are trying to hit the max here. You'll get 6 points up to $3500. You can double dip on the regular spent offer with this as well which 'might' make this an o.k. offer. 6 bonus points is not that great of an offer. Amex runs AMZ promos every one in a while and I would wait for a better one. I have a +8 MR points right now which I will be certain to max out :)

I agree. I occasionally get cash back Amex Offers for Amazon that end up being 20% off ($10 back for $50 purchase). It's not several thousands or even hundreds limit, but I don't spend that much on Amazon.
