Reminder: you must enroll and select AA as your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. "Please call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Summary of Reimbursements.

  • Admirals Club Passes
  • Admirals Club Food/Drinks
  • Elite Status Buyback
  • External Reservation Fee
  • Five Star Service
  • MCE/Seat Selection
  • Mileage Multipler

  • Same Day Flight Change

  • Baggage
AMEX AA Reimbursement NOT Approved

  • Close-In Ticket Fee
  • Elite Challenges
  • Gift Cards
  • Inexpensive tickets
  • Infant Fees
  • Miles Purchase from AA.com
  • Wifi (per flight)
50/50 on Whether it gets Approved
  • Award Taxes/Fees
  • Change Fee
  • Pet Fee
  • Upfares

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: Elite Status Buyback: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Gift Cards:
  • No
Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Miles Purchase from AA.com: Monthly AA Wifi Subscription Plan: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit. Monthly Wifi subscription plans through AA appear to be eligible for automatic credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

NOT WORKING: Partial payment by gift card or voucher combined with partial payment by Amex doesn't work. Full payment of a ticket under $100 stopped working sometime in 2020.

Just a DP. My award charge of $5.60 was not reimbursed from Jan 11. I didn’t call about this because I was able to use my whole credit for MCE charge.

can you describe how the mce works? Did you book it at same time as your flight or at a later date?

You can do either way. If you select MCE seats at time of booking, AA will process it as a separate charge, and Amex will pick that up accordingly.

Thank you!

Anyone have success in getting them to reimburse through chat for the upgrade you have to pay from basic economy to economy.

I wouldn't exactly call that an upgrade because its essentially the same cabin. I would rather call it some type of change fee - it is a fare class change after all when you switch from basic to regular. See what happens when you chat (but don't call it an upgrade).

* The remaining amount to pay on AMEX PLT card is $133.

Would the $133 charge to the AMEX PLT be reimbursed from the $200 credit?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!
I have the same question, does anyone have a datapoint similar to the Delta forum?

Thank you for your reply. I hadn't realized that. Would you happen to know which airlines still credit GC's?

There are none. However, there are way to redeem giftcards as part of a ticket purchase which makes the remainder post as as Additional Collection, which may be reimbursed. There is a separate thread for each airline. Verify before proceeding.

Thanks again. I fly enough that I am usually able to use the credit but on occasion have been caught with it remaining... scrambling to find a way to use it. It seems that even minus the GC being credited now AA is the most flexible in terms of being able to redeem the credit.

Award Cancellation Fee Success

I have been able to receive credit back for AA award ticket cancellations on two different occasions. In both cases, had to call after the statement was received. No push back from the customer service person either time. The customer service person said it was not automatically taken off the statement because of the way AA had coded the charge. It probably helped that the word 'fee' was included in the charge description on the statement.
