Many commonly asked questions are answered in this post.

Reminder: You must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Wait several hours or even a day before making the purchase, although several DPs show it works without waiting that long.

(Posters often refer to Southwest as WN which is its IATA code. The code SW is assigned to Air Namibia.)
As of late July 2019, direct gift card purchases are no longer reimbursed.
  • What does appear to work is buying flight tickets less than $109, OR using gift cards to get the charged amount down to less than $109. Given Amex's recent behavior in other areas, some feel there is real risk that Amex will decide to claw back this type of reimbursement someday.
  • If you buy a ticket where you use travel funds to reduce the total charge to your Amex below $109, it will be reimbursed.
  • Fees can be reimbursed for any traveler. The name doesn't matter as long as the charge is on your American Express or that of an authorized cardholder.n
  • As of 1/1/22 Gold card accounts do not qualify for airline credit.
Always read the last few pages to get up-to-date DPs.

I don't know the answer but it seems like needless risk since sometimes digital wallets and automated credits don't always play nice with one another.

From what I've seen the total including tax should be under $100 to be safe.

Wonder what痴 wrong with my Plat account. I bought a $98.98 ticket on 12/10 and it never got credited. I then bought 4x $48.98 recently and the credits posted quickly.

Did the same for me, did not trigger. I verified I had chosen Southwest already, and every other detail was the same.

I just tried again today (12/24/20) - will update
Due to the year end approaching and not wanting to miss out I bought 4x $48.98 flights a few days ago and they all credited. I知 stuck with an extra $98.98 credit on Southwest now but I have CP we use a lot so no big deal, fortunately. I certainly was not going to chat with Amex about this.

Was this a brand new Platinum? How long did you wait since selecting an airline? Was it a temporary card security code?

New Platinum I got mid-Nov for the 100K bonus. I selected the airline probably a few days prior to the first $98 purchase.

Being I forgot to do this until now - what's the likelihood that if i do this today that the credits when they hit will count for 2020 vs 2021 being that it takes a couple days?

I was wondering the same thing. I think as long as the transaction is dated in 2020 in assuming we値l be OK. Imma risk it for the biscuit. Either way you値l get a credit for 20/21 ッ\_(ツ)_/ッ

can you tell a difference in the way the $98 flights posted vs the $48? I am waiting on some $98 ones and may need to try cheaper.
