Amex [USA] update to Delta cards including Centurion lounge access for Reserve.

Looks like there will be updates to the Delta card family. The Delta earn rate still isn't as good as the vanilla AMEX Platinum. Even worse now the Delta Reserve gets Centurion access (when flying Delta And guest are $50). These clubs are to crowded as it is. The no AF Delta card now lets you pay with miles (1cpp floor) which is nice. I'll likely downgrade to that when my AF is due on my Delta Platinum.

Summary from Gary

Gold cards:
  • Add double miles at U.S. supermarkets and restaurants
  • Increase annual fee to $99
  • Lose $29 per visit Sky Club access
  • Lose spending waiver for elite status effective January 1, 2020
Platinum cards:

  • Add $100 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
  • Increased earn: double miles at U.S. supermarkets, 3x at Hotels and Delta
  • Personal card: earn 2x at restaurants
  • Business card: 1.5x on purchases of $5000 or more
  • Increase annual fee to $250
  • “Miles Boost” transitions to “Status Boost” and no longer includes bonus miles
  • Per-visit access to Sky Clubs increases to $39
Reserve cards:

  • Adds Centurion lounge access [when flying Delta for cardholder and $50 for guest], and 2 one-time SkyClub guest passes
  • 4 “status boosts” annually (“Miles Boost” transitions to “Status Boost” and no longer includes bonus miles)
  • Complimentary upgrades for cardmembers without status
  • Add $100 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
  • Earns 3x on Delta
  • Business card: 1.5x on all purchases after spending $150,000 per calendar year
  • Lose priority security access
  • Sky Club per-visit fee for guests goes up to $39
  • Annual fee goes up to $550.

It appears that Las Vegas and Charlotte are the only airports with a current or announced Centurion lounge but no Skyclub. At airports with both, I expect that the Skyclub is typically more convenient for Delta flyers. No doubt there will be an initial novelty attraction, but in the long run I anticipate it will be minimal - and Delta may have insisted on reciprocal access to continue to admit Platinum and Centurion cardholders to Skyclubs.

You will get pay with miles with the Skymiles Blue card, so no need to carry an AF Delta card now for that feature.

Honestly at SEA, the Skyclub is nicer anyway except for the alcohol selection, but the fact is that even where there is overlap, there will be additional strain on Centurion.

I'm glad you did the research on where there wasn't an overlap b/c when I first saw the announcement I was curious.

Per-visit access to Sky Clubs increases to $39
Any guesses as to how long before that applies to vanilla Amex Platinums?

My guess is LAS will get exponentially busier since the lounge is by all the DL gates. I'm not sure this is a good thing given the overcrowding we've seen.

I read the terms of the reserve card - it states that the cardholder gets the MQM credited - no mention of being able to gift them anymore. Anyone see if gifting MQM’s are still possible?

I actually saw in the terms that it can be gifted. Maybe skim it again to be sure?

Fee increase on Delta Platinum is nail in the coffin for me. I barely use this card.

I was thinking the same thing! Maybe if the companion certificate can be used for Comfort Plus it would be worth it. I’m in my first year of the card (used the signup to book CI J) but will downgrade to the no AF come renewal.

All we were hearing was that overcrowding caused the 3 hour limit and the elimination of lounge access on arrival. I agree, this seems like a bad move.
