yep - so it's a downgrade for purchases other than dining and travel

Yes, it would seem that Amex thinks we are all idiots. I logged into my account and it said there are two new earning rates, the 3x and 2x MR for dining and travel. What it failed to mention was that there is a third new earning rate, everything else went down from 1.25 MR per $ to 1 MR per $.

A Refresh is Apt

Well, they did call it a refresh and not an upgrade/enhancement. I would guess that they ran a report looking at charges in each spending category over all Platinum card holders combined and determined that they could do 3x dining and 2x travel at the same cost as 0.25x on all spending. This could move my travel spending to my Platinum card because finally I have some MR earning power on the same Amex card as the travel insurance.

I have a Amex Plat in the US and have been putting flights on that because of the 5x earning on flights but recognizing that I can't rely on their baggage delay insurance because of the cross-border residency issue. 2x/3x MR would beat out the HSBC MC for those cateogries.

I'm a bit disappointed that it no longer earns 1.25 MR/$ since I have a large purchase coming up in a couple of weeks. But overall, I do tend to spend alot on dining and travel, so I'll likely come out ahead over time.

Maybe you'll get lucky and the bonus earning rates will apply to all charges on your next statement.

I stopped using my Amex Plat to pay for travel because my CIBC Aerogold Visa Infinite Privilege offers superior travel insurance coverage than Amex Plat. Also the CIBC card only requires 75% of the costs to be paid with the card vs. 100% for Amex Plat. This is more flexible if you have a MCO or gift card that you want to use.
When out of the country, I used my HSBC Premier WEMC as it does not have any foreign currency fee.
Amex Selects is non-existent in North America.
So the refresh is a downgrade for me if all other charges now only receive 1 pt./$1 instead of 1.25 pt.

I called card services and asked. They said the new MR rates are effective on charges posted as of today.

Indeed, hard to tell if anything purchased through an agency would qualify if the agency submitted the card transaction itself, rather than passing through for airline, hotel or other provider to bill.

It looks like Uber, Lyft, monthly transit pass or single/return urban transit tickets are all excluded from my read of the T&C.
In the past, I would have received 1.25 pt./$1.

I just called in and they won't be automatically issuing the new metal cards right away - they will be send them out on your renewal date. My existing plat card was in atrocious shape so I just requested one be sent out immediately. With the new earning thresholds, it makes my use of the gold and cobalt cards redundant so I guess I will be cancelling those.

Multiple posts on Reddit of people being told the 2x/3x applies effective today, but the 1x only applies beginning June 25th, for existing cardholders. Also 1 DP on Reddit to that effect.
