Wife will cancel the Plat card, too late to keep MR alive by getting another card?

My wife’s AMEX Plat AF posted on 6/8. The plan is to cancel before 7/8 to get AF refund. But she just remembered that she has no other MR card and she isn’t ready to transfer the points to any program yet. The plan now is to apply for the Blue Business Plus card to keep the points active. My question is— the the ME programs combine the moment she’s approved and assigned a Business Plus card? Or does she need to receive the card first to activate the MR account? Or worse, does she need MR activity in the Business card first?

I recall from somewhere that MR can survive unattached to a CC for 30 days before moving to a better world. If that's the case and the old MR does not automatically attaches itself to your wife's new BBP, a good rep should be able to fix that.

This is true if, and only if, she holds another card issued by American Express. It doesn't need to be a card that participates in Membership Rewards, but if she holds NO other card the points will vaporize on closure.

Great, she still has the SPG Business and Hilton card. So if she applies for Blue Business Plus now, will that automatically tie the MR accounts? Or does the first statement need to close first?

It will tie the MR accounts together. If there's an error with tying the MR accounts together, a simple chat on the website with a customer service representative can fix it.

Normally, but there is a small possibility that a new MR account will be created. (I have never had this happen.)There may not be a way to verify that the new card is linked to the existing MR account until it is physically received, but if there is an opportunity to create/use a UserID during the application process the new account might show up online before the physical card arrives. You do not need to use the same UserID to link to the existing MR account.

In any event it's not critical because the co-branded cards will preserve the points during the transition. Terms are here:

https://rewards.americanexpress.com/...v=footer-tandc

If you voluntarily cancel your enrollment in the program (or if you are an Additional Business Card Member with your own separate program account and the Basic Business Card Member voluntarily cancels his/her enrollment in the program), but you keep at least one American Express® Card open and is not past due or canceled, you'll have up to 30 days from the date of cancellation to use any points in your program account.

If you voluntarily cancel your enrollment in the program (or if you are an Additional Business Card Member with your own separate program account and the Basic Business Card Member voluntarily cancels his/her enrollment in the program) and you don't keep open any American Express Cards, all points in your program account will be immediately forfeited.

Thanks for the replies.

You should get an Everyday and or. BBP yourself so the same Panic Transfer symptoms don't overcome you.

Relatively new here but have a very similar question similar to DaveInLA. Would having / opening a Blue Cash Everday work out in keeping MR if a platinum is closed? If the choice where available without loosing my points, I would rather the Blue Everyday over the Amex Everyday.

Thanks.

Only for 30 days because it is not a card that participates in Membership Rewards.

It should attach automatically the moment you register the new card under the same log in, IF you still have another MR card. That was how it happened with my Everyday when I opened it solely to keep the MR from PRG alive. Last year after registered the Biz X 2, the total balance of MR shows up under that card too. So it is automatic.

But if you no longer have the MR card I guess you have to call Membership Reward and have the rep over there to manually do it for you.

It may no longer be possible, but years ago I remember reading that Amex would allow (on an exception basis) you to transfer your MR to an authorized user upon closure of an MR-earning card if it's your only MR-earning card. Better solution of course is to get BBP or Everyday to avoid these types of problems.

OK, so my wife just applied for and was approved for the Blue Business Plus card. She completed the application while logged on to her AMEX account. However, after approval, the website asked if she wants to add that card to an existing account. She entered her same login info and it said that card can't be added to that account. So she opened a new login. Now she will have a 2nd MR account as well. How can she get AMEX to combine the orphaned MR points from the cancelled personal Platinum card to combine with her new Business Plus card?

She shouldn't need to do anything. The cards being in the same login or separate logins have nothing to do with the MR account being linked.

When she logged in to her new account after creating it, there was no MR balance. We will call AMEX to link the MR accounts when card comes.
