Amex Platinum sign up bonus: 700,000 MR (HK)

Sorry if this isn't the right place, but does anyone know how this offer works in the way that is it a standard sign up bonus? I've read the terms and conditions but am stumped. Many thanks

The terms are straightforward. 600k MR points on approval and 100k additional MR points if you applied online. Posts within 8 weeks.

Not quite sure what you are stumped by.

It is not a standard offer.

1. The card is recently downgraded from "by-invitation only" to open applications. So AMEX needs new apps fast to make this popular.

2. The card has a HKD$7,800 (=USD$1,000) AF. It is expected you won't get the MR until you pay the AF.

3. Hong Kong's credit card culture is not to pay AF (waiver of any kinds). So a reason is needed to encourage applications, especially with one of the highest AF in Hong Kong.

4. Hong Kong's MR does not have the same value as other MRs in the world.

I think you made a typo.

HKD 7,800 = (approximately) USD 1,000

Complimentary enrolment in the Membership Rewards Turbo Program - Every HK$1 you spend gets you 2 points3 and converts to 1 air mile for every HK$7.5 spent4.
I'd guess it's roughly somewhere around the equivalent of ~100k MR in the US

It is 46,666

Because it takes 15000 HK MR to receive 1000 airline miles. 15:1

700,000 / 15 = 46666.66 if you transferred it out to an airline program whereas in the US it is 1:1.

Bottom line: Forget HK issued cards unless you really need one for whatever tactical reasons.
