It may be different in Canada, but in the USA this choice is typically made by the merchant's acquirer, the company that processes their card transactions. It's likely that the merchant does not know, or care, how they are classified because they have outsourced this choice as part of transaction processing. American Express likely does not have the contractual right to change it.

I'm wondering about opinions on the worth of convering MR Select Tier points to the new combined SPG/Marriott program. Is this good value? Or should I be spending my points elsewhere? I mainly use this card at restaurants and grocery stores due to the 5x accelerator at these sites - and use another card elsewhere.

Conversion to SPG/Marriott is still good value.
Try out the fixed points travel option in the Cobalt rewards site. I've found very good value there, and I'll probably try to maximize using my Cobalt points there.

Interestingly, the FEEDBACK app (for cheaper food on off-peak time) processes charges as 5X, but Ritual still can't. Sigh.

Has anybody tried converting MR Tier Select Points to Marriott Points since the consolidation of Marriott and SPG programs? I merged by Marriott and SPG accounts, and had previously transferred my Tier Select Points to my (now merged) SPG account.

How do I switch the transfer account info in Amex's system over to my Marriott account?

Call AMEX and tell them to take the number off. You'll be able to add a different one after that. I have to do this with some regularity for Aeroplan for reasons.

I haven't used the fixed rewards program from Amex yet. When booking AC tickets with it, is the flyer able to collect Aeroplan points? Asking since RBC's Avion program by default books non-mileage accumulating tickets, and I am wondering if there's a bit better value with Amex rewards.

I know with United it books to revenue class. It appears as a charge by the airline, and then a credit from Amex. Can’t say for sure that it works the same with Air Canada, but probably.

Yesterday I just transferring points to my SPG/Marriott and noticed the SPG number that was showing was different from both my historical SPG number and also my new merged Marriot number. I called Amex and they indicated that that was the new number that was provided to them so I asked them to switch it to my new Marriott number and the CSR stated that they had dealt with this issue previously and to keep the SPG number that they were provided. My SPG Amex was also showing this same new SPG number. So, then I called SPG and she said to keep it as is although I don't 100% believe she knew what she was talking about. 24 hours later, there is no transfer to my Marriott rewards account. Has anyone else experienced this? I should also note that transfers pre-merger were done with my old SPG number with no issues noted.

Correct. New SPG account numbers have been generated for everyone who has a Starwood account.

I had both Marriott and SPG numbers before the merging of the systems. Once I merged my SPG account into my Marriott account, I called Amex and had them remove my SPG number from the Cobalt (and also Plat) Membership rewards transfer record.
Then I later added my Marriott number online.
Today, I just completed my first MR to Marriott points transfer from the Cobalt account, using the Marriott number in the system. It worked properly.

If you don't want to call, they can also take care of it by email. Just use the "contact is" button.I replaced my old SPG # with my Marriott # and my points transfer went though fine (and quickly).

Question transfer to UA MP

I have been approved for the AMEX Cobalt Card today. Reviewed the t's & c's with the call centre & everything is in order - with one exception.
I was advised I could transfer AMEX Reward points to hotel (e.g. Marriott Bonvoy) - but - not to United Mileage Plus. Where exactly is it written otherwise?
