USA personal Platinum Uber $200/year credit (2017-2019)

Benefits go live in a few days.

Do we only have 2 days to use our $15 uber credit? (For March)

Or does the $15 uber credit begin in April?

I assumed it begins 'March 30th' , my guess is the # of days you have to use March/April credit is dependent on your monthly billing cycle ... e.g. if your billing cycle ends April 3rd, you've got about 5 days to use Uber for $15 and see a credit -- I also assume it needs to move from pending to posted prior to your billing cycle cutoff

Do you think we could have a separate thread for Uber when it goes live?

Nice.

Also, do we know yet how multiple plat cards for the same person will work? Multiple 15$ credits or have to be separate accounts.

donotblink Mar 27, 17 12:13 pm

Looks like our hopes that this would work for Uber Eats have been crushed :-(

Me too, especially because I am using Uber to get to the airport that day :). Fingers crossed.

Platinum Card Members will receive $15 in Uber credits for U.S. rides every month plus a $20 bonus in December, delivered through an exclusive Uber app experience. Thatís up to $200 for Uber annually. Platinum Card Members will also become Uber VIPs, where available, without meeting minimum ride requirements and be matched with top-rated drivers, so that even a 5-minute trip can be a 5-star experience.

To receive the benefit, Platinum Card Members must add an eligible Platinum Card as a payment method on an Uber account. Starting March 30th, 2017, $15 in Uber credits will be added to that Uber account each month with a bonus $20 in Uber credits in December. Uber will apply the discount at the end of ride, and it will be reflected on ride receipt.

I think the plain language there means a $15 credit (if used) for the month of March. But I have a feeling Amex doesn't really mean that -- I suspect they intend for April to be the first month for Uber credits. We'll soon see.

I am more bummed by this than I thought I would be. I don't ride Uber but wouldn't have minded Amex covering my delivery fee!

Explorer789 Mar 27, 17 6:09 pm

A Platinum Card account may receive this benefit on one Uber account. If the same Card is added to multiple Uber accounts, only the first Uber account to which the Card is added will receive the benefit.
How do they detect which account is the first account that it is added to? Is it possible to switch the benefit to another account after a while?

JHake10 Mar 27, 17 7:50 pm

So in theory we will get a March credit on the 30th and have all of the 30th and the 31st to use it? Then we should get another credit on April 1st?

Previously I only had my Uber account linked to Android Pay. However, I linked my AMEX card directly now. I think I should be all set.

gooselee Mar 27, 17 9:35 pm

Wishful thinking, but reading this from the FAQ page mia linked:

Starting March 30th, 2017, $15 in Uber credits will be added to that Uber account each month with a bonus $20 in Uber credits in December.
Could this potentially mean that $15 will be added on 3/30, then another $15 on 4/30, then another on 5/30...and it all aggregates into a total balance that can be used anytime after that, not a use-or-lose-each-month scenario?

That would be one way for Amex to only provide the benefit in scale to the length of time someone actually has the card and is paying the AF (yes, yes..no proration, etc.), vs. the $200 airline fee credit where people are known to redeem it all in early January and then cancel the card.

Prorated AF refunds (or lack thereof) aside, this provides incentive for someone to retain the card month-to-month if they're considering cancelling during a cycle.

No, the credits expire at the end of each month. Take a look at the T&Cs posted in this thread's Wiki.

Ahh...you're right. My earlier skim I only paid attention to the bolded parts.

Oh well.

WantsAmex Mar 28, 17 11:33 am

Reading this it seems like we do only have 2 days to use our March credit.

Credit may be applied to all Uber car types and cannot be applied to other Uber services. Credit may only be applied to rides within the United States. Monthly ride Credit expires at 11:59 PM local time on the last day of each month. Unused Credit will not carry over to the following month. Credit will be applied for the month in which the ride is completed

I think there are two possibilities:

  • There will be no March 2017 credit
  • There will be a March 2017 credit valid for 48 hours only

...which do you prefer?

I think a third option is possible. That the credit added on March 30, 2017 expires on the last day in April.

In addition to, or instead of, an April 1 credit?

There's only upside here. Best case, you get an extra $15 for March in addition to the $15 that we all expect to have for April. Worst case you spend the $15 allotted for April, but still no loss.

Consumer class action lawyers would prefer option 1.

sparviero Mar 29, 17 11:34 pm

I talked to a customer service rep and she said that we have two days to use March's Uber credit.

In my city Uber offers flat-fee packages that last 30 days, so I'll buy $15 worth (5 rides) and report back if it gets reimbursed.

I guess if the restaurant is close enough you can just call an uber to and from to get food if you need to burn the credits at the end of the month...

mhdena Mar 30, 17 12:17 am

$15 Uber credit in my app at 11pm.

Got the credit too. Expires Mar 31, 2017.

C W Mar 30, 17 4:28 am

I have the US Platinum card but I live in Germany. I visit the US a couple times a year, so with the expiring nature of the credits this benefit is currently of very limited use to me.

I'd like to gift it to a good friend who takes a lot of Ubers, but if I'm interpreting the terms correctly, I'll never be able to unlink it from her Uber account and put it on my Uber account?

Sweet! I'm soooo glad this works on UberEats too. I wasn't going to be able to utilize the credit if it had been good for Uber only.

C W Mar 30, 17 4:45 am

Just opened the app and got the $15 credit. Isn't usable in Germany where I live, of course. But oddly, I tried to order a ride in the US (which can be done from anywhere in the world if you're so inclined, for a friend or whatever) and it still said that the credit was unavailable in my region. Disappointing. As in my post above, hoping to gift this benefit to a friend.

According to this Uber help article, there is a way to change the Uber account where upcoming monthly credits will be applied:

How to switch which Uber account gets Amex credits:

1. Delete the eligible card as a payment method on the Uber account(s) with the eligible card on file that you do not wish to receive the benefit.*
2. Add the eligible card as a payment method on the Uber account you wish to receive the benefit. If the eligible card is already on this account, skip this step.
3. Complete steps 1 and 2 by 12:00am EST on the 1st day of the applicable month that you want the Amex credits to apply to the applicable account. The benefit will switch accounts for the new month.

*You can re-add your eligible card on the additional account(s) after completing these steps if you wish to use this eligible card as a payment method.
Once a monthly credit appears in an Uber account, though, it appears to be 'use it or lose it' from that account.

flyershmlyer Mar 30, 17 5:56 am

Ugh! Just tried on mine - says, you have the benefit but not on this phone. most likely on my older iphone that's at home somewhere that I keep as backup. by reading the terms, it says I need to delete payment info on the other phone, so that it kicks in on this one. (not sure what would happen if I'd lost the other phone permanently, for instance).

it also says that the credit allocation to a phone resets every 1st of the month, which means:

1. I lose this month's credit, unless I lug around 2 phones.

2. I better delete payment from the other phone, today or tomorrow, or I'll lose credit for April too.

Has anyone actually tried this in Uber eats yet?

Also aren't we supposed to get VIP? I'm in Atlanta which is a VIP market but don't have the VIP option on my app

Opened Uber app in South Africa - $15 shows; not available for use in my area
Opened Uber eats in South Africa - $15USD shows as well

gooselee Mar 30, 17 9:40 am

Also seeing a 3/31 expiration in my app. Oh well.

Interestingly, I have my Plat card attached to both my Personal and Business profiles in the app. When Business is selected, the Amex credits default to off. When Personal is selected, the credits default to on. Seems like someone was actually thinking ahead.

Same. I may get UberEATS for dinner tonight or tomorrow. If nobody else has tested it by then, I'll report back.

I'm in ATL as well and I see the VIP option when I swipe over to the premium ride options (where Black/SUV are). Same price as UberX, about the same # of cars available right now (lunchtime in midtown).

Las Vegas, NV. Unfortunately the activation fee of $2.50 did not get reimbursed.
Also, this was my first time trying it, and apparently you don't prepay for the rides, you just prepay the activation fee for all of them and then you have flat rates for 30 days.
