American Express Platinum Card® and Centurion® Card Benefit

You can receive up to $200 in Uber Cash annually by adding your Consumer Platinum Card® or Centurion® Card from American Express as a payment method on your Uber account.

The Amex Benefit in Uber Cash is distributed in monthly increments of $15, plus a $20 bonus in December (for $35 in December total). This amount can be used for Uber services in the United States. The Amex Benefit will expire at the end of each month and will not roll over to the following month.

To use the Amex Benefit in Uber Cash:

1. Enter your destination on the home screen
2. Tap on your payment method
3. Select Uber Cash (If you're using ride profiles, tap Change and select Uber Cash)
4. Request a ride

To find your Uber Cash balance, tap the menu icon in the top left corner of your app and select 'Payment'.

When Uber Cash is selected as your payment method, the Amex Benefit will be applied to your fare. When your Amex Benefit isn't enough to cover the cost of the ride, you will be presented options to top-up your Uber Cash using a payment method on file. Alternatively, you may choose to pay the remaining balance for the cost of the ride using your preferred payment method. You can view your current Amex Benefit balance by tapping 'Payment' in the main menu of your Uber app.

You will receive the Amex Benefit each month as long as your Card remains eligible and is a payment method on your Uber account. If your eligible card is added to multiple Uber accounts, the account that you added the card to first will receive the benefit.

If you already have an eligible card on your Uber account, the benefit will automatically be applied to your Uber Cash balance. To add an eligible card to your Uber account, go to the 'Payment' section of the Uber app and select 'Add Payment Method'.

The Basic Card Member is eligible to receive this benefit. Additional Card Members are not eligible. You'll receive $15 in Uber Cash each month (plus the $20 bonus in December) for each eligible card on your Uber account.

How to switch which Uber account gets the Amex Benefit:

1. Delete the eligible card as a payment method on the Uber account(s) with the eligible card on file that you do not wish to receive the benefit.*
2. Add the eligible card as a payment method on the Uber account you wish to receive the benefit. If the eligible card is already on this account, skip this step.
3. Complete steps 1 and 2 by 12:00 AM EST on the 1st day of the applicable month that you want the Amex benefit to apply to the applicable account. The benefit will switch accounts for the new month.

*You can always re-add your eligible card on the additional account(s) after completing these steps if you wish to use this eligible card as a payment method in those additional account(s).

Members with an eligible card will have access to UberVIP in select US markets. UberVIP is currently available in Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville, New Jersey, New Orleans, and New York City, and will be expanding to new cities beginning January 2019.

If you have specific questions about your American Express Card or other American Express benefits, please call the number on the back of your American Express Card.

For more information and to see the terms and conditions please visit uber.com/amex

Multiple $15 credits can be added to a single uber account by two different AMEX platinum cards and each card will trigger an increase of $15 to the credit balance.
If you are the primary Card Member on multiple eligible Card accounts, and those Cards are payment methods in your Uber account, you will receive the combination of credits for multiple Cards. For example, if you have two eligible Cards, you will receive $30 in credits each month for the combination of the two $15 credits. In December, you will receive $70 for the combination of the two $35 credits.
Your uber app must be set to request rides in 'personal' profile mode - other options (family, business) will not offer the AMEX credit

Terms of the Uber benefit (as of 2017-12-15, maybe obsolete):
Only Basic Card Members on a Platinum Card account are eligible for Uber VIP and monthly ride Credits. To receive this benefit, you must have downloaded the Uber App version 3.219 or later for iOS or version 3.126 or later for Android and your eligible Platinum Card must be a method of payment in your Uber account. If you are assigned a new Card number, you must update your method of payment in your Uber account. Cards added to your Uber account through a third party such as Apple Pay or PayPal will not be eligible. A Platinum Card account may receive this benefit on one Uber account. If the same Card is added to multiple Uber accounts, only the first Uber account to which the Card is added will receive the benefit. Uber VIP is available in select cities and is governed by Uber's terms and conditions. Credit may be applied to all Uber car types and UberEATS orders. To redeem monthly ride Credits, you must select to use the Credit in your Uber app prior to completing the Uber ride or placing the UberEATS order. The discount will not apply to previous Uber transactions and cannot be used when paying with an UberFAMILY profile. New and existing Uber users are eligible. Uber will apply discount at the point of sale. There is no limit to the number of transactions you may apply the Credit to each month, up to a total of $15 in Credits per month. Each year in December, you may apply up to $35 in Credit. The discounted cost of a ride will be displayed on your post-ride email receipt. If you are eligible to receive additional Membership Rewards points on your ride transaction, points will be awarded on the balance after Credits are applied. Credit may only be applied within the United States. Monthly ride Credit expires at 11:59 PM Hawaii Standard Time on the last day of each month. Unused Credit will not carry over to the following month. Credit will be applied for the month in which the transaction is completed. If transaction is eligible for another promotion that you have added to your Uber account, the promotion will be applied before the Credit. Certain Uber-branded credits may be applied to your balance prior to this Credit. For purposes of fulfilling upon this benefit, American Express will share with Uber certain information about your card, including the card type, and updated Card information from time to time. If you do not wish to participate in this program, please call the number on the back of your Card.

Uber support on this is a comedy of errors

After allowing my son to use the March credit, I had him delete it from his account, and registered my card to my account on April 1, and saw the $15 show up under a new "Credits' section. However that disappeared the next day and has not shown up again, so I haven't been able to use the credit. I reached out to Uber support and it's been laughable, a combination of stock answers about calling Amex, or just telling me about the Amex promotion, or asking me again what the problem is. It doesn't appear that their support team has access to the full thread so it's like starting from scratch each time another one responds.

Here's the full thread:

ME: I allowed my son to attach my platinum card to his uber account for the March credit. He then deleted my card from his account on March 31 so that I could attach it to my account. I did attach it and the $15 showed up in the credits section. However, it then disappeared a day later - and I had not used Uber. I tried unattaching and reattaching the card but still not showing up. Can u please help. Thank you.

UBER: Thanks for writing in. I'll be more than happy to assist you, however, I would need for you to go in details of the credit you're referring. Due to the fact, this would aid me in my investigation to further assist you. I do look forward to your response.

ME: I’m not quite understanding your question — This is in regards to the new Amex Platinum Uber benefit. Is there someone there you can pass me to who is familiar with this new benefit?

UBER: I have reviewed your account and it seems that the AMEX Points were added to your account and has gone expired. Your AMEX Premium Benefits expire at the end of each month at 11:59:59 PM HST. Unused credits will not roll over to the next month.

ME: Yes but a new $15 credit is added each month. There should be a $15 credit to use for April.

UBER: Thanks for reaching out. For questions about your American Express Card or other American Express benefits, please call the number on the back of your card. If you have questions about redeeming your Amex Premium Benefits, let us know and we’ll be happy to help.

ME: Amex sent me to you. Can you please escalate this to a specialist who understands the new Amex Platinum/Uber partnership? Just to add clarity based on the Uber FAQ at: https://help.uber.com/h/65645907-404...2-2acdd7990205 I completed the following steps: How to switch which Uber account gets Amex credits: 1. Delete the eligible card as a payment method on the Uber account(s) with the eligible card on file that you do not wish to receive the benefit.* 2. Add the eligible card as a payment method on the Uber account you wish to receive the benefit. If the eligible card is already on this account, skip this step. 3. Complete steps 1 and 2 by 12:00am EST on the 1st day of the applicable month that you want the Amex credits to apply to the applicable account. The benefit will switch accounts for the new month. The $15 credit for April showed up briefly then disappeared from my account. It was never used.

UBER: Sorry for the inconvenience here. Kindly delete the app and reinstall it directly from uber.com/app as this would be a good first step to resolve any known issues. This ensures you're using the latest version available. I hope this was able to fix the problem. I'm very glad that I was able to assist you today. For other concerns, you may find this LINK useful.

ME: I just deleted and reinstalled the app. Still no Amex Platinum credit showing up. The payment rewards section is visible but the credit section is not. Again this was visible on April 1. It just disappeared.

UBER: Sorry to hear about the trouble here, happy to assist you. Can you kindly provide a screenshot of the issue you're having? Once I have this information at hand, I will be in a better position to resolve this issue. I will keep an eye out for your response.

ME: Screenshot of my payments screen is attached. When I first connected my Platinum card there was a "Credits" section that showed the available $15 credit for April, but that is no longer there.

UBER: For questions about your American Express Card or other American Express benefits, please call the number on the back of your card. If you have questions about redeeming your Amex Premium Benefits, let us know and we’ll be happy to help.

ME: Are you able to see the full thread? This is something Amex told me to contact you about.

UBER: Sorry to hear about the trouble here and happy to help. I checked your account and can confirm that your amex_premium credit of $15 is already added to your account. While they will apply automatically by default, you can toggle credit On or Off after you've set your destination and before you select your vehicle option. You can also see how many credits you have at any given point by clicking on Payment in your app in the left-hand navigation. You can read more about enabling or disabling credits on help.uber.com. Please note that unlike credits, promos apply automatically on your next trip and there isn't a way to choose whether or not to use them on a given trip. If you used credits on a specific trip that you would have preferred not to use them on, just let me know and I'll be happy to adjust. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

ME: I understand how it is supposed to work, but the credits are not visible when I click on payments. When I first linked the card there was a distinct section under "Payments' that said "credits" and showed the $15 as available. Now however that is not visible. Because of this I cannot toggle between choosing the Amex credit or paying via another method as you have suggested.

UBER: Thanks for reaching out. Happy to help! I am sorry to hear about the trouble. In order to be able to provide an accurate resolution, I request you to kindly send us a screenshot of the error you are having. I will then be better able to further assist you. Hope to hear from you soon.

ME: This is like the comedy routine "who's on first?" I already uploaded a screen shot. Are you able to view the history of this support request? The screen shot shows clearly that it is missing the "credits" section which should have an item underneath it that says "Amex credits". I will start over and upload the screen shot again.

ME: Now I'll paste an image of what it should look like based on an article I found online. You see in the second photo the "Credits" section. That is not visible in my account.

ME: I just took a ride in [City] and was not able to apply the Amex Platinum credit, based on the issue described in the above threads. Please credit my account the $15. Thank you.

UBER: Happy to be assisting you. To review how many credits you have available, tap the menu icon in your Uber app and select Payment. There you’ll see your available AMEX Credits and expiration date. You can also review credits used for trips or UberEATS orders in your receipts. To review trip receipts: 1. In your Uber app, tap the menu icon 2. Tap Your Trips 3. Select a trip 4. Tap Receipt
Keep in mind, credits expire at the end of each month at 11:59:59 PM HST. Unused credits will not roll over to the next month. Make sure to use your credits before they expire! Please let me know of your further inquires.

Well, that's one horrorshow of outsourced CS support if I've ever seen one.

It sounds as if you needed to link the card to your account on the 31st. Have you looked to see if there is an April credit on your son's account?

I completely understand your feeling. I don't know why Amex didn't bother to look into all Uber complaints. They are horrible. Imagine if you have a serious issue and have to ask for their support?
We use Uber as a last option. Usually we use Lyft first.

I did. I was in dc this weekend for the cu cherry blossom race and was gonna use Uber Saturday when I saw the $15 credit. I used it and on Sunday the April $15 credit was added. Have not used aprils credit. But using the credit was a piece of cake. The email just showed the zero dollars charged for the ride. Also, you don't have to use all $15 on one ride.

Unfortunately this credit applies to your first ride of the month, regardless of whether you use your Platinum card to pay for that ride or not. Easily 90% of my 50 or so Uber rides a month are for business purposes, and paid for with my regular AmEx Corporate Card, so the $15 a month Uber credit I'm paying for via my personal AmEx Platinum annual fee accrues to my employer instead of to me.

Set up a business profile? I haven't used one yet but it looked like you could prevent using discounts with that.

You can turn on and off credits.

This. If you go into payment options there's a toggle.

Also, I already had separate Business and Personal profiles set up. My Business profile defaulted to have the credit toggled off, and my Personal profile defaulted to having it turned on.

A fair amount of discussion on this upthread.

So I thought this perk came with Uber VIP included. I didn't see anything on the ride indicating VIP and I was in dc...

Credit now visible

For those following my saga, I finally got this reply from Uber support yesterday:

"I sincerely apologize if your concern about Amex Benefits wasn't addressed properly. I can understand that you're being frustrated about it, but please allow me to explain what happened. We currently have an on-going issue with Amex Benefits right now and our team is aware of this issue and we're working hard to resolve it as quickly as we can. Again, I apologize for the inconvenience. I really appreciate your patience and understanding in dealing with this matter. If you have additional questions, please let us know."

And today the credit mysteriously reappeared in my account. So it appears that this was a system wide issue. Now I'm trying to get them to retroactively apply the credit.

Doesn't appear to be the case any more. No VIP comes up for me in DC.
