CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

Does anyone know if paying your balance helps trigger the credit?

When it posts correctly, are they coded as: Document Type: MISCELLANEOUS TAX(S)/FEE(S) ? Anyone know?
Reimbursed today!

Payments have no effect on airline fee credits.

And there it goes. The $42 on AA card and my $50 SAKS rebate on the same day

Not good. How long after you selecting AA did you purchase the gc?

Just saw my meter decreased to $200 today, so assuming the $50 credit will post tomorrow.

My timeline:
12/11 - Picked AA and bought $200 GC minutes after selecting my airline
12/16 - Bought $50 GC
12/19 - Meter decreased by $50

I’ll probably buy two $100 GC later today. I’m thinking I bought too soon after I selected an airline so going to give up hope on the $200 one.

If I were to eventually get reimbursed say next year for the $200, would that apply to next years credit?

Exact same thing happened to me. Kinda relieved I'm not the only one. FWIW, I also had purchased $100 AA GCs x2 on my Amex Biz Plat, on same day 11/27, and was reimbursed for both of those on 11/30. So 3 of 4 purchased on 11/27 were successfully credited.
I did online chat with Amex about a week afterwards but rep said simply that need to give it 4 weeks to post and if it doesn't then to recontact support to ask to credit it manually. Kinda scared to try that route, cause they could inquire into what the charge was for and then deny it.
Has anyone with initial credit failure on GCs purchased on 11/27 seen the credits post yet? Thanks.

Pending AA GC charge merchant info:

AMERICAN AIRLINES-CCS
TULSA, OK 74133-1249

Previous AA GC charge merchant info:
AMERICAN AIRLINES

FORT WORTH, TX 76155
I noticed on mine when the charges were pending it was the Tulsa address, but when it finally posted it changed to the Fort Worth address. I think you’re fine.
