CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

I bought a $100 gift card on 6/25 and was reimbursed on 6/28. I purchased a 2nd on 7/2, and am still waiting :-(. Hopefully it is just a delay.

I registered my choice as AA on July 1. Bought a $100 card a few hours after that. As of 7/6 I still have not gotten the credit back. However, when I look at the dashboard for that card, it shows that I only have $150 of the $250 airline credit available for the year. Does this mean the $100 is incoming?

Welcome to FT! In answer to your question, I am going to say, "Yes." In my experience, weekends (and, I'm assuming 4th of July, too) slow things down relative to the purchase/post/skip a day/credit that is the 72-96 hour ideal.

IME, yes. The dashboard registers just prior to the credit posting.

Registered AA as my designated airline on 7/2. Ordered $100 gift card on 7/2 but still waiting for credit to post.

Perhaps as others have suggested, the 4th slowed down the process. Hoping to see a credit soon.

Document type shows taxes and fees.

AMEX Platinum, transaction posted on 7/2, still hasn’t been reimbursed. I’m starting to worry, anyone knows if this is normal, or is it taking too long? Thanks!

(New to FT, please bear with me).

Signed up for the AA Platinum Challenge ($250) with my Amex Hilton Aspire card. Didn't trigger a bonus. I'm gonna call in and see what I can get, but I think their terms exclude "upgrades" so I don't have much to stand on. Didn't think at the time to try and split between cards or something. No big deal, I have flights upcoming on AA that I guess I'll buy gift cards for.

AA Gift Card

Hey everyone,

Made AA my designated airline today (7/11). Purchased two $100 gift cards (separate transactions) minutes later. Will keep everyone posted on how it goes!

How do you see this dashboard? Is this referring to when you click on Benefits and then on $200 airline credit (where it says enrolled)?

Yes. Now here's the strange thing - the dashboard used to show up on both Plat and PRG. However, recently, as noted in a similar discussion with another FT member, the dashboard has disappeared from the Plat but is still available on the PRG. But yes, it's under "Membership", "Benefits", and then the airline credit area.

Looks like this (the green semi-circle begins as blue but turns green as you consume the credit):
