CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

I purchased max $100 AA GCs on 1/4 for my Amex Plat (2x 100), Gold (1x 100), Aspire (2x100,1x50).

Have not been reimbursed. Meter still shows unused for all 3 cards. It is closing in on 2 weeks. Thoughts? Has this happened to anyone?

My original plan is to not contact Amex - and keep waiting. I will probably wait until later in the year when I need AA gift cards again (August? or later?), then try a $50 gift card purchase. If that $50 goes through, then continue cautiously... regardless of what happens right now, the waiting game starts...

Did you make sure your airline selection was set to AA before making the purchase? Also which method did you use to buy GC's. If I remember correctly you have to do it through the desktop site, or maybe that was for Delta..

i purchased it directly from AA's website. I had AA selected as my airline from last year. But I also reselected my airline that day. I did the same process on a family member's card. They got reimbursed on 1/8.

I am still stuck in limbo

I bought 2 $100 AA gift cards on my amex patinum business card on 1-7-2019 and still have not recieved a credit. In fact my statement closed on 1-11 so I just got a bill for these charges. Is it worth doing a chat with a rep about this? I do have AA listed as my airline on this card.

I also bought 2 $100 AA gift cards, but on my amex personal platinum on 01/08/19. I still have not received a credit either. Wondering the same thing as you, if I should contact them yet.

If you contact American Express a few days after making the charges they will almost certainly tell you to wait four weeks, because the automated system sometimes misses transactions on the initial pass, but picks them up later. What's the hurry?

You shouldn't have to reselect your airline preference every year if there's not changes. But wait a couple more weeks, it'll probably get picked up.

Purchased 100$ gc on 1/8. Reimbursed 1/10. Check the coding on the charge. It should code as "Travel - Airline" , then state American Airlines with the address.
