CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

Towards the end of December, I selected AA as my airline and let it marinate for 24 hours. I bought 2x $100 gift cards and the credit posted within a few days as expected.

I don't think these events were coincidence. There's a data propagation time that Amex didn't think would affect anyone because real life 'fees' are typically incurred days or weeks after the airline selection is made.
On my gold card, I actually forgot to change my selection from Delta to AA before purchasing the gift cards. However I remembered literally right after buying the first one and then changed my selection. Bought the second $50 gc right after as well and I got credited.

Hey guys,

So question. Today is the last day of my 30 days cancellation period (to receive the Amex fee back). Yesterday, I tried to use the Amex and Saks credits (last minute I know) but both transactions are still pending on the account so I haven't received the credits yet. If I cancel my card today, is there any way I can still get those credits or would I be forfeiting them? Also, is there any way I can get Amex to extend the 30 days so I can cancel tomorrow or the day after once I receive those credits?

Thanks!

If these charges won't trigger the credit, I'll go ahead and buy GCs to use later. Anyone have any luck with credit on taxes/fees?
Ended up purchasing 2 x $100 eGCs on Jan 3rd, credit posted evening of 1/7. This was on an MB Plat, selected American Airlines on 1/1.

Never got credit on the award ticket taxes/fees.

I did a single $200 GC on 12/31, which was reimbursed. Looks like most people are going smaller because others have reported over $100 not working.

I might have messed-up. In 2018 I did the 2 $100 GC approach and that worked just fine

For some reason, I forgot I did that and on 01/07 I did a single $200 GC. I'll report back, but I'm initially nervous since the pending merchant data is different for this GC purchase then the merchant data from the 4Q2018 purchases.

Jan 2019
$200 GC
Merchant Name and address:
AA ARC
7645 E 63rd Street STE 600
Tulsa OK

For the 4Q2018 items, I don';t remember the pending merchant data, but the hard posted Merchant was:
American Airlines
4333 Amon Carter Blvd
Fort Worth, TX

Update 01/09: The charge hard posted over night and I was happy to see the merchant data was changed to match the 4Q data,so now I'm hopeful that the credit will follow in a day or so.

Update 01/11: Reimbursement credit posted for $200, so all is good. The only difference from my 2018 experience is that in 2018 the two $100 transactions both earned 5x MR. For this single $200 transaction, it only earned 1X MR.

I'm in the same boat. I got two separate gift cards but at the same time so it came in as a $200 purchase so I'm holding my breath!

Several $100 GCs purchased on 1/4; all credits say they posted 1/7 but if so it was very late at night.

I did $100 on 1/4 with the gold card and I haven't gotten the credit yet and the gauge still shows full. I'm a little nervous because right before it posted my account was saying I didn't select an airline when I had selected it last year. Hopefully it clears tonight.
