CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.
Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."
Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:
Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.
* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

No Reimbursement for AA GC
New Amex Platinum cardholder. Read all the stuff on the airline credit utilization and chose to go with AA bc I saw such high rates of success. Have a trip planned for next year and airline prices were good. Purchased 4- $50 AA GC in October still no reimbursement and it’s December. Now I don’t know what to do with this credit. Good thing I was able to use the GC to pay for part of my airfare so no money lost but may rethink staying with AMeX platinum and the steep fees if I can’t really use the $200 credit for anything. I don’t want to waste the $200 for 2018 and in about 2 weeks it re-sets for 2019... anyone have suggestions?
Thanks!
Thanks!

- Did you select AA as your airline choice on americanexpress.com?
- How long did you wait after registering to buy the giftcards?
- Did the charges post as four $50 transactions, or as one $200 transaction?
- Does the benefit meter on americanexpress.com confirm that you still have $200 available to use?

One failed attempt does not mean that you will never succeed.

Agreed,
- this is true, I might try a $25 gift card to test it. See my replies in bold
- Did you select AA as your airline choice on Amex.com? Yes I did, once I did I then went to buy the GC. Maybe I should have waited.
- How long did you wait after registering to buy the giftcards? Less then 24 hours
- Did the charges post as four $50 transactions, or as one $200 transaction? 4 different transactions
- Does the benefit meter on americanexpress.com confirm that you still have $200 available to use? Yes

Same here. Bought on 12/14 for two separate Platinum cards in our household, and still nothing. The data showed unavailable all weekend, and yesterday the meter jumped back up to $200. I'm thinking we're SOL on this one. Might have to do it again, or buy lesser amount of gift cards. I'm thinking it makes sense to buy the gift cards in the beginning of the week. Maybe weekend maintenance screws with things.
If it doesnt come up after the 4 weeks, I will chat and ask. note that checked pets are $200 on AA so the system should allow this amount if the GC is coded the same way as an airport transaction.
