CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

Basically, I want to buy an e-giftcard like you all are doing. Is it straight from AA.com?
Well, it's at the top of the page. This page. You would click on "Click here to display Full Wiki".

It actually wasnt showing for me at all. There was a small "+" button on the far left I missed, which showed the wiki, and that in turn allowed me to click "display full wiki"

Thanks!

Whats up with the 72 hour hold? Annoying...

Anyway, bought $80, will report back in a couple of weeks.

Purchased on 12/7, posted on 12/9, I see the credit shows posted on 12/10 (but I saw it in my recent activity on 12/11).

No 5x points on my purchase, but we'll let that slide
Cheers.

The 5x points will be credited in a few days. For whatever reason, AMEX has a built-in delay on bonus category points posting; same thing happens with the 4x points on the Gold card for those bonus categories.

Gotta ask the question - did you select AA as your airline of choice on the AMEX website (or by calling in) prior to making the purchase?

American Express's IT system appears to use batch processes. Most likely something went wrong with the batch that was run to look for eligible transactions processed on the 27th. This does NOT mean the expenses will not be reimbursed, only that those transactions will not be picked up until they run a different type of process that looks at a wider range of dates. This appears to be done less frequently.

This near to the end of the year you probably do not want to wait the full four weeks, but I would wait at least another week.

When using Amex airline credit can I go ahead and buy three AA giftcards back to back in the amounts of $100 x2 and $50 in the same day? Or is it better to buy one GC let it clear then buy the next one. Just trying to get these done before end of 2018.

Yes. You may also be able to buy higher denomination cards, as we have some reports of reimbursements (scroll back), but the safer course is to buy $100 or lower.

Think I may try to go for $150 on my Aspire. I bought a $100 card yesterday so that is still pending.

Hilton Aspire
Registered 12/7
Purchased $100 egift on 12/8
Posted 12/11
Credit posted 12/11

The purchase posted earlier in the day and the credit posted sometime that night.

I have now put in another purchase for $100 on 12/11 and one for $50 on 12/12 (oddly both are showing as pending from 12/11). I also registered the Platinum yesterday (12/11) and put in a purchase for $200 today (12/12). Hopefully these will all go through.
