CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.
Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."
Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:
Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.
* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

Bought a virtual AA GC for $86.22 on 11/13. Got the credit from Amex on 11/15 for the exact amount (that's all the credit I had left). Hope this helps

Details:
1. On Wednesday, November 14th in the evening, I purchased 1x $200 American Airlines virtual gift card with my Amex Platinum on my home laptop computer.
2. It originally appeared on my statement as "AA ARC"
3. It finally appeared on my statement as "AMERICAN AIRLINES 45800-433-7300 TX"
4. It is classified as "Miscellaneous Tax(S)/Fee(S) Flight on November 14 Ticket Number XXXX"
5. It is purchased from as follows:
AA ANCILLARY SALES
4333 AMON CARTER BLVD
FORT WORTH
TX
76155
000008004284322
Reimbursement Process:
1. On Saturday, November 17th, in the morning, on the Amex Platinum Benefits page, it showed that I used up all my $200 Airline Fee Credit for the year of 2018. However, the $200 reimbursement credit still did not post on my account.
2. On Saturday, November 17th, a little before noon, the $200 reimbursement finally posted.
Comments:
1. Indeed, the headline of this thread states that buying gift cards over $100 may not be reimbursed. In my haste to buy this gift card, I overlooked this detail until after the fact...
2. As for my Hilton Aspire card, I might buy 2x gift cards in the denominations of $150 and $100.
3. However, I would be interested in what AFmoneyguy has to say about his 1x $250 gift card American Airlines purchase on his Hilton Aspire.
4. I have tried to quote him below.
5. I made this account today just to give my anecdotal experience, as I felt it might be useful to everyone else in this thread to get more data on those who got reimbursed on AA virtual gift card purchases of > $100.

On the "large purchase" DP trend-- I purchased 1x $150 card and 1x $100 card on the same transaction, for a total charge of $250 to my Aspire card, on November 11. My credit for all $250 posted in one transaction on November 14.

I'm still waiting on a reimbursement of $100 from Oct 28th. When looking under benefits, it says "You have used all of your $100 Airline Fee Credit for this year. It will renew again starting Jan 2019". Has anyone had it take this long and still successfully get reimbursed?

I just got the card a month ago, so haven't used the credit previously. Before making the $100 purchase, it was showing as $100 available. After the purchase, the benefit changed to the above, but the charge was never reimbursed.
