CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

But only the two $75 charges have the "5x" icon next to them - I'm gonna call Amex and tell them exactly what they did wrong and that I WANT MY BONUS POINTS (no I'm not)
You may find that the 5X icon shows up in a day or two. I've noticed this with my PRG bonus categories - there are a few days' lag between when the charge posts and the bonus points icon appears.

I was just about to order the GC until I see your post. Pls do update reimbursement status.
Also I was trying to make airline selection in the past couple of days but always got error msg saying that their system is being maintained. I had to call in to make the selection. Hopefully the maintenance did not impact anything. Any DP of reimbursement after11/6 would help verify that.

I have $68 in credit left for the year. Does Amex cap at $200 exactly? I'm wondering if I can buy the $75 GC and ask them to either reimburse the full amount, or if they'll credit the $68 so I can fully utilize the credit.

If you buy a $75 gift card, AMEX will credit you for $68. You'll pay the remainder.

Thanks! Better to do that than buying a $50 GC and leaving $18 on the table.

Has anyone ever attempted to buy miles from AA to obtain the Amex credit? Like GCs, this technically violates the rules, but wonder if it would work. I’m just a few miles short for redeeming my AA miles for a CX first class award and so need to purchase miles to top up, and hoped my Amex $200 credit might offset the cost. Any experiences?
