CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

Did you also designate AA as your preferred airline for the Gold card?

Yes I did, although I only wait 10 minutes after selected AA as preferred airline to buy the GC. But I also did the same thing for the platinum card's credit so I think it would work the same

It takes a few days for their system to have it in the system so it is processed automatically.

Last year I purchased a seat selection within a day of selecting AA has my preferred airline and it didn't register. Had to go thru customer service to have the manually process.

As a DP, I selected AA on my personal plat, and bought gift cards, maybe 10 minutes later, so it appears no delay is needed when getting them.

8/3 Selected AA
8/3 Bought 2x$100 gift cards on aa.com
8/5 posted to Amex
8/6 reimbursed $200

I upgraded PRG -> PLAT on 7/28. These were my results:

8/3: Purchased 2x $100 AA eGC
8/7: Reimbursed $200 by Amex

So good news - if you upgrade, you appear to still be eligible for the entire annual credit.

For those who use their credit for baggage fees, the credit for self-service kiosk baggage fees are still not posting automatically and require a call in after 4 weeks to get the manual adjustment.
