CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

I did this a couple of weeks ago and details are the same. Reimbursed in a few days. I just did my 2nd AA GC for $100. Gotta get it in before I cancel the Platinum card!

It is interesting that a $5.60 charge (FF ticket taxes) listed as passenger ticket was automatically reimbursed but a $19.20 charge (also FF ticket taxes) also listed as a passenger ticket was not automatically reimbursed.
What did you tell them the charge was for? Is the assumption that award ticket fees don't automatically qualify, but if you call in, they'll make the adjustment?

I don't see why you can't get $75 credit again, as long as you haven't exceeded the annual $200.

Purchased 25$ baggage fee @CLT kiosk back on 10 Mar, and the reimbursement never showed. Called Cust service yesterday and the rep said that he has to wait 14 days to be able to process, although he validated my point.

"So I have to call back again in two days ?!"
"Yes, unfortunately so".

Grrrrrr.

Gold Status

Has anyone had success having the $200 credit apply towards the paid upgrade to gold status?

I was pleasantly surprised that my AMEX platinum refunded me for my AA revenue fare.

Flight cost me a total of $226.20, used $225 worth of AA gift cards (purchased courtesy of the travel reimbursement) and paid $1.20 with the platinum to gain travel insurance benefits.

Saw a credit a few days after purchasing. Does AMEX just push through refunds if it's such a small amount?

Are GC's purchased with AA resulting in 5x MR points on the purchase after you have received your $200 credit (i.e, anything above and beyond $200)?

Is anyone else having trouble getting reimbursed automatically when buying luggage charges at the AA self-kiosks at the airport ? Once again, the 25$ baggage charge isn't being picked up as a fee to be reimbursed in the Amex system.......so I'll have to wait a month and call again.

Since you can't purchase checked bags in advance......

I had to call and have $100 of my $300 charge credited manually. The representative asked me what the charge was for, and I told him I didn't really remember, "...maybe an award fee."
