CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

I don't think we've seen data points for this yet, but even if it does not process automatically, I'd think you'd have good success requesting a manual credit, assuming the fee posts as a separate transaction.

Unlikely, but let us know if you experience otherwise.

Bought the tickets about 20 minutes apart, so not sure why one would post over the other. Have a couple more of these in my future so hope to use the rest of my credits this way.
I did something similar with AA gift card purchase and Amex Platinum for the balance and it has been 5 days and no credit on either one. They are showing up as passenger tickets in my account, so I doubt a credit is going to come through. The one that you got reimbursed...what is that showing up under?

Unfortunately, can confirm it does not automatically trigger and they will not manually override.

The blog One Mile at a Time is reporting gift cards are no longer triggering AMEX credits.

I've had success with those in the past. Haven't tried recently on AA, but those purchases are well within the T&Cs, should not be an issue. Worked for me this year with United as my airline (both food and inflight wifi).

Note that inflight wifi won't work for AA because it is billed by a third party and not AA. Inflight meals definitely work on AA.

That's good to know. I have tons of gogo passes and just haven't used the Panasonic wifi yet, so haven't tried it. I would think that food would work though.

why do you need to keep (or get refunded) for the mileage multiplier if you are not going to fly? Sorry, if I misunderstood your post

the flight gets refunded because you are not flying it, the multiplier is not refundable, so it will be reimbursed

right. Where is a gain? The purpose os the credit to get reimbursed for something you need and not for something you do not need.

the benefit is that, (a) if you need a few miles to top off a redemption, AND (b) you don’t have a better way of spending the credit, this is an option. It is also cheaper than buying miles through the portal. The other benefit of this is that you can pick any flight you want and get the closest flight multiplier you need. So, if you just need, say 1800 miles, you can play around until you get the right flight that will give you around that in miles multiplier...

The only caveat make sure you book a flight far out and cancel within the 24 hours, but if it is within a week of the trip I think you cannot cancel so that would be an epic fail.
