CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.
Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."
Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:
Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.
* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

Flew IAD - LAX with my wife last weekend. I was upgraded (AA Plat) using 500 mile upgrades and my wife (AA Gold) was upgraded to first as well but required a $200 fee (no 500 mile upgrades). I paid with my Amex Platinum card and the $200 was reimbursed a day after the charge posted.

Bought 2 $100 AA virtual gift cards in the same transaction on 6/6
I thought I messed up because the charge posted as a single $200 charge.
But still received the $200 airline fee credit on 6/8!

Experience getting upgrades reimbursed?
I know the terms of the AMEX reimbursement benefit exclude upgrades, but what have people's experiences been getting those 500 mile upgrade coupons at $40 each reimbursed? Does it matter how many are purchased at a time?
I'm not sure what my chances are at getting a buy up offer at online check-in 24 hours before departure if I don't request an upgrade using coupons, but I'd be interested in people's experiences getting those reimbursed by AMEX as well.

I bought upgrade stickers end of 2016- did not get reimbursed. It's funny- every time we use the Platinum card to pay baggage fees (when my son travels to college) no automatic reimbursement. I have to call in and request. They will do it, but it's a pain. However, if I buy an aa gift card- no problem, automatic and quick reimbursement! Seems a little backwards according to their terms.

Purchased $100 AA GC on 6/18 and still have not received the reimbursement. This is for the Gold premier reward card. I bought the 2x GC for same amount with my platinum card few months ago and got reimbursed 3 days after. The only different I am aware of is that at the time of the GC purcahse on the Gold card, I have a negative balance from a return (AMEX owns me some money). Would this be the reason why It did not trigger reimbursement for the GC? Is it worth while to try again?
