5x MR points for airfare bought with AMEX Platinum directly from airlines or on the AMEX travel website.
If this is all it is it will be a major disappointment, imho.

The article makes it sound like this is the only change. Disappointed if so.

"The company wanted to improve the program ahead of the busy holiday travel season."

Well, sorry, I am done booking my holiday travel (at least the airfare part). But I will be sure to put the Plat card number into my UA and AS profiles for future bookings.

From the AP story:

"American Express is also announcing changes to its OPEN Business Platinum Card, including a program where OPEN Platinum Card users will earn 1.5 points per dollar spent on purchases of $5,000 or more. That change will also be effective Thursday, Fuller said."

I believe this will mean individual transactions $5,000+, not on spending above $5,000 in a period.

That's what I think as well. So, PGR for dinning and Supermarkets, EDP grocery, gas and everything else and Platinum for Airlines. Amex MR ecosystem is back in the game for me! For hotels, I have hotel specific cards, so absolutely don't care for Reserve 3x hotel points.

Not really - he predicted Oct 5 would be a different announcement than the rumored new card.

Some people have been throwing around a date of October 5th, but I suspect that will be for a different promotion/offering.

Well.. not too exciting, but I will definitely keep my Platinum Card. On the other hand I will drop my Gold Delta Card unless Amex offers me a retention bonus or miles for upgrade to Plat Delta or Delta Reserve. 2 measly Sky Miles per dollar is no comparison to 5MR points per dollar. I don't check bags and often fly FC, so I'm wasting $95 a year on the Gold Delta.

5x on me is somewhat useful. For domestic I am better off using the ritz carlton card $100 off. For international travel 5x would be OK.

1.5x on transactions 5k < is actually really good for some times of businesses. We pay our big invoices with our credit card. So getting 1.5 is actually really good. And no card gives such a high credit limit as a charge card

The Seattle Times reported that AMEX scheduled a media event for tomorrow that "would make traveling with American Express Platinum better than ever before."

There may still be more to come (I hope).

Meh I don't really use that feature.
