Amex statement closing dates and posting dates

I'm looking for a reliable predictor of how Amex dates the posting for charges that hit over a holiday weekend, and also how they adjust statement closing dates when the regular statement closing date would hit on a holiday weekend.

For example, on my SPG card, the statement typically closes on the 2nd of every month - but in some months, when the 2nd falls on a weekend day, the statement actually closes a day or two earlier.

I'm trying to time a large purchase (down payment on a new car), and will be making the purchase on or around the 2nd of the month (in this case, July 2nd, a Saturday – so not just on a saturday but both a saturday and a holiday weekend). I would rather that the charge hits my next/following statement, rather than on the statement that closes on the 2nd (that is, I'd rather have 6 weeks to pay that off, rather than 2 weeks). The goal is for the charge to post on the next statement .

Can anyone here articulate what the "rules" are for when statement closing dates move if they would otherwise fall on a holiday weekend?

Thanks.

Why don't you simply call AMEX to find out the exact closing date for that billing cycle?

No need, it's shown on their website for each card.

It is also shown on the statement. That American Express provides this information is one thing that I like about the company.

Citi does this too, at least with the AA MC and the Prestige MC (the only two Citi cards I have).

Chase also shows the Next Closing Date online. As far as I know it is always the same, they do not adjust for weekends or holidays. Be aware that the date shown is often inaccurate for the first statement on a new account -and- an the first statement after a billing cycle date change has been requested.

Thank you, fliesdelta, for the info on Citi.

Thank you, mia, for the reminder about Chase. I stopped checking because the date seemed constant, which is even better than providing the next closing date online. It's good to know the limitation on a new account or an account with a changed cycle period. (So far, I have not asked for a cycle period to be changed, and I'll probably forget your warning by the time I do.)

Trying to avoid starting a new thread. Anybody have a hack for how to get points for the current cycle to post sooner? I'm trying to convert a pile of starwood points to AA to take advantage of the bonus and have 100,000 points posting between September 17-19. Transfer bonus ends September 14th...

Are these Membership Rewards points or Starpoints?

Are the points already shown as pending? (Only applies to Membership Rewards).

Are these bonus points for opening a new account? (Posting dates of bonus points not necessarily related to statement date.)

Starpoints from actual spend. Not bonus points.

Update. Called AmEx and asked if there was a way to move statement close for the current cycle. Nope. Asked if there was a way to manually process. Nope. :(
