I just bought four $50 Delta e-gift cards, and it states on the email I got that the gift card cannot be used for 72 hours. Has anyone been able to use these in less time? Perhaps 24 or 48 hours?

In case others have the same question, the answer is no. I called twice and both reps said they couldn't accelerate the use of the GCs. It seems it is bec when you buy the GCs, Amex puts the charges on "Pending" status for around 60 hours, then moves them to "Posted" status. Even when they hit Posted status, I will got a message saying I had to wait at least 72 hrs before I could use them. When it was just over 72 hrs, I was able to use them.

Luckily the price of the seats I wanted did not go up and I got the $200 credit from Amex.

The merchant (Delta) does this, not American Express.

So if Delta does this, it makes even less sense. Why not post the charge immediately and make is useable immediately?

Airlines typically use the same merchant account for gift cards as they use for tickets. They are required to allow ticket cancellations within 24 hours. A simple way to implement this seems to be to allow purchases to stay pending until the cancellation period has passed. If you cancel they never post the charge; easier than processing a refund. The gift cards and other transactions are simply carried along in the same processing cycles.

Just to confirm; did you purchase via the Delta website and did you select eGift Card or the physical ones (I see shipping fees for physical ones). Please let me know and I'll proceed accordingly.

Thanks!
