The Canadian Amex Retention Thread

Did a search through the Retention thread, and could find only one or two posts hidden referencing to the Canadian cards. Figure we could start a new Wiki here just for Canadian cards as the welcome offers are starting to weak (SPG, no more FYF for Gold Business / Aeroplan Gold, etc). For those that decide to actually keep using their cards....what are some offers you received?

Called as my annual fee on my gold was coming up. I have been patiently waiting for an Avios transfer bonus all year and seeing nothing. I also spend over $1000 per month at Costco, so the end of that relationship made me feel I should ask for something to keep this card.

Card Type: Gold Rewards
Member Since: 1999 (this card for about 4 years)
Appx. Annual Spent: $25,000+
Retenton Offer: $100 Amex gift card.

I'm happy with this offer as it reduces the cost of this card to $50 for me and I value the travel medical at more than that.

I think more people should be asking for something to keep this card as the value is definitely reduced. Maybe they will add some enhancements.

Amex Gold Rewards Canada

Noticed my $150 annual fee posted. First year with the card and I planned to keep it but thought I would try for a retention offer.

Approx $60K in gas groceries and travel put on the card last year. Told the agent I was thinking of cancelling the card as I heard the RBC Avion has some great benefits. She put me on hold for a minute, came back and offered my 20,000 member rewards and I accepted.

You had the SPG card for 3 months, they gave you a 10K SPG retention offer and you canceled? Are you planning to churn it? I take it you've already paid the $120 AF and at this point it's not refundable... why not take the 10K and then cancel it later?

What are you guys saying to have these bonuses offered? I have an Amex Plat (since 2013) and I've spoken with them via email and phone a couple times and only ever been offered 7000 MR points (close to 50K spend last year). Is it just a matter of HUACA? Or do I actually have to request the cancellation and not just say I'm thinking about it

I've done it twice now. I just bring up the annual fee, combined with benefits that have been cut back and that I have another premium card that I've been using (TD Aeroplan Prestige). They pitch me on the benefits. I say, that's great...do you have any retention offers to make?

If they didn't offer a retention, I'd probably hang up and call again.

Mikey got 10k SPG? Man, I'm jealous. I'm going to call back.

First of, I'd liek to thank all the members that have contributed to this post. I never thought/knew about the retention offer. I am more than happy with the card and service, and always renew no questions asked. After finding this thread, I decided to give it a shot.

Took it like I stole it.

I took it as because of the new rules, one time sign up bonuses and one of the few cards for referral points.
