*** Limited time offer ***
Amex EveryDay 15000 MR points after $1000 in 3 months

The 15,000 MR points offer is still available via referral from someone who already has the card. See or ask for this in the discussion. Or look at the Amex referral page: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/amer...posting-3.html.

These are the direct links on americanexpress.com. I have not scoured the internet to seek better offers. Note that both offers include this standard language:

If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer. This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.
Opening the application link in a Private or Incognito browser window, and not supplying any information about existing accounts, should prevent American Express from identifying you as currently having a card during the application process. They can still instantly determine this using your Social Security number, but in practice this may not occur.

**You can now do a product change from AMEX Blue to the regular fee free AMEX EveryDay card. Unsure about other AMEX products that you can change TO the EveryDay card** This would probably preclude you from receiving any sign-up bonus, but moving from the Blue to this card is a + for some.

Use this calculator to work out whether you're better off with the preferred or regular card.

Either way I was over counting as you point out (I initially interpreted 50% as 2x, but that would be 200%, I think).
Somewhere (technical term) it said the bonus is on base+category bonus

It would be interesting if someone could do the math with some basic numbers.

Compare Preferred everyday and PRG with $30k in annual spending, $6000 in grocery spending and say $4000 in gas purchases.
Here's mine assuming "50%" is based on base + bonus (see above post) 4.5x groceries, 3x gas, 1.5x other. I'm assuming 30k annual, $500/mo groceries, $90/gas $175/mo Airfare (estimates based on my budget)

Everyday
Base spend | bonus categories | 50%

Gas | 90 | 90 | 90
Groceries | 500 | 1000 | 750
Other | 1910 | | 955

total MR (monthly) 5385

PRG
Base spend | bonus categories

Gas | 90 | 90
Groceries |500 | 1000
Other |1910 | 350 (airfare)
annual 15k | 1250

total MR (monthly) 5190

Results will clearly vary based on your spending patterns and how much you spend on airfare. But given the Preferred Everyday is $80 cheaper, it's pretty tempting.

Sorry these numbers are hard to read, wish I could just makes tables.

Well, that's not exactly hard is it?

On the PE, the $6000 supermarket spending generates 27,000 MR (assuming 30 a month purchases through this spending). The remaining $24,000 generates 36,000 MR, for a total of 63,000MR

On gas and grocery ($10K) , PRG gives 20,000 MR, on the remaining $20K it gives 20,000MR, for a total of 40,000MR.

So the new card wins here before bonuses. But with a lot more grocery spending and gas spending, the 2x on PRG vs 1.5 on PE will close the gap

Unlike Airdoc, I am assuming the bonus applies to category bonus as well, so supermarket is 4.5 rather than 3.5 etc.

FYI we loaded these cards into our comparison engine earlier this morning. You can see how they stack up versus other cards on point earning based on your monthly spend habits here:

http://milecards.com/cardfinder/

Since there's no big early bonus you'll want to filter based on 'ongoing years' in the toolbar on the right to get a better comparison.

For example with $2k in monthly spend, $500 in groceries, $250 in dining, and $200 in gas the Preferred version can earn 57,600 points a year with the 30 transaction per month bonus. Well ahead of the Arrival or Venture at 48,000 points (yes, Arrival gets a rebate, but only if you redeem, so we count that in point values) and the Freedom at 48,000 points if you go through the effort to hit all the category bonuses.

Or if you just want to comp against Membership Rewards cards do that here

http://milecards.com/cardfinder/amex..._credit_cards/

A note: some browsers aren't handling grocery amounts above $500 a month correctly, so just input $500 or less in that field and you'll get an accurate figure until we get to the source. The 'remaining' field will automatically handle your over-the-cap grocery spend correctly.

You guys don't need help with dollar values per point, so just pay attention to the total points earned figure, though you can edit point values if you're really OCD about it.

How are you interpreting the bonus, i.e do you get 4.5x on groceries or 3.5x?

If you're asking me, I adjusted my analysis to include base + bonus, i.e., 4.5x groceries, 3x gas, 1.5x everything else, based on your interpretation of the terms.

TPGs interview

ThePointsGuy chatted with someone at Amex and confirmed that the 50% applies to all points earned. So if you hit the transactions threshold, it's 4.5x groceries, 3x gas, 1.5x general spend. So, let's compare the two.

I tend to spend around $10k/yr in groceries, $1.5k on gas and $4k on airfares. I usually hit the $30k spend for the PRG using everyday purchases. For the PRG this nets me: 20+3+12+14.5+15=64.5k, so averaging 2.15 pt/$. For the new card this will be (18+4+3+19.5)x1.5=51k, so averaging 1.7 pt/$. Not so great.

However, if I optimize my spending to suit the new card, transferring flights and the excess in groceries to cards that I'm churning), using it for small purchases (so about $3k/yr general spend), I would be earning (18+3+3)x1.5=36k for only $10.5k spend, giving 3.4 pt/$. This would be just 12+3+3=18k (1.7 pt/$) on the PRG, and so for me even the loss of airfare bonus opportunity doesn't offset things. That's a considerable boost in value, and encourages me to free up more annual spend for the Chase SP.

Clearly the only remaining area of strength for the Amex PRG is the airfare bonus. For people like me whose spending in that area is only a few k, I suspect that you'll be better off switching, but it does involve adjusting your spending on the card relative to the Amex PRG. Also, if you spend well over $10k/yr on grocery store purchases with the Amex PRG, you may want to consider sticking with it or getting both!

One final point to consider is that the Amex PRG often offers some pretty good retention bonuses, for me averaging around 15k/yr. I can't see retention bonuses for this card being as high. That being said, not using the Amex PRG for every day spending, means it can be churned, which should more than make up for that.

I tweeted AskAmex to see if current charge card cardholders (e.g., PRG) would be eligible for the Everyday signup bonuses. Got this reply:

"We do not have any info on the Bonus details for the card. The Card will be available by April 2, 2014. If you would like, you can go to americanexpress.com/everyday, and provide us with your email address. When it becomes available, we will send you an email and provide you with a link to apply for the Card."

We interpret the bonus as 50% on all points earned, so 4.5x on groceries for the Preferred.

This seems like a good card, the problem with this and any credit card offering more points for groceries is that we don't shop at traditional grocery stores very much. If we spent $100/wk on groceries, $30 is at Aldi (debit card or cash only), $50 is at Target/Walmart and the rest is at a traditional grocery store.

3x plus the 50% (1.5x) is 4.5x not 5x. Not sure how you think 2 is half of 3. =P

What's the best way to hit 30 transactions each month?

Amazon gift cards? Think Amex would get pissed if each month I bought 30 $0.50 amazon egift cards?

Except for a morning cup of coffee I don't always make 1 transaction a day.
