Anyone ever use "Express Pay" (contactless payment) [Canada]?

I use the "Paywave" on my Visa card quite a bit but have not yet been able to use the contactless payment (RFID) feature on my Canadian Amex Plat card. One of the reasons i got to thinking about this was that i had a real catch-22 experience the other day at London Drugs; i was just buying a small item, ideal for this quick payment. so i went to the self serve cashier, scanned, clicked pay, and put my amex up to the reader. the display read something along the line that it couldn't accept this method and to please insert my card. so i inserted my card and the machine then told me to swipe. so the ridiculous part was that when i placed my card at the top end of the slot, the RFID reader read the chip and beeped telling me to insert the card. i couldn't get the card past the swipe mechanism because the RFID chip would get read. finally i just used my visa which seems to be the solution to trying to pay with amex.

I haven't been able to use this feature with my amex anywhere. are you having success with your amex card and contactless payment?

Sounds like a real funny situation. I would scratch my head too if every time I try to swipe the card the RFID gets read and displays something.

Probably a similar situation to some places in the UK, where the contactless reader hasn't been setup to take Amex contactless, although that is now improving in the UK. When it does work, it is very speedy.

And in the long run it will enable some superstores or larger stores to reduce the number of cashier's desks open. :td:

So no advantage for the customers at all. Only a fraction of a minute used for entering the PIN.

Many stores here have eliminated almost all of their human cashiers and replaced them with self service machines. I don't like that at all.

I don't know about Canada but plenty of manned POS are also contactless.

While I don't like them, self service machines are generally much more convenient for small purchases.

The only success I've had was at one particular Tim Horton's, thought I have to admin I fail enough times with the contactless POS that I generally don't try anymore.

You are supposed to swipe the card from the bottom of the machine going up!

i thought of that afterwards. one of the cashiers was helping me (read: getting in my way) and i just got fed up and used my visa.

I've only been successful with the contactless stuff at Petro Canada (pay at the pump, not sure if the in store stuff works), and Harvey's (where they then make you sign the slip afterwards for some weird reason).

I believe it worked for me at a Swiss Chalet recently.

Nope, swiping up doesn't help at LD. Spent a ridiculous amount of time trying all sorts of things to get ANY payment method to work with Amex. Ended up using Visa, no problems.

Works fine with the Green P parking lots in downtown Toronto.

Do you get extra points for using "Express Pay"??
