Same here. I have the Canadian Platinum card.

1st attempt at using $200 credit - wanted to book 4 one-way tickets from OGG to HNL - cheapest rate AMEX could get me was $395 via Hawaiian Air (whereas, I could book direct with Hawaiian Air for $324 including all taxes and fees). I declined, and booked flights via Island Air for $252.40 (AMEX didn't have a license to book with Island Air apparently) FAIL.

2nd attempt at using $200 travel credit - wanted to book 1 night's hotel stay on Waikiki - the hotel in question had ocean view rooms for $225, Expedia.ca had the same rooms for $235, AMEX Travel Service Rates were $285!!! I booked it anyways since I didn't have anything else to use the credit on, but it makes the travel credit only worth $140 to me, since that's all it really saved me. Certainly better than nothing, but not the $200 in value I was expecting to get out of it when I signed up for the card. FAIL.

I can only assume that the AMEX Travel Service is marking up the prices to lower their cost of providing this "travel credit." That's shady.

Don't have to be so complicated. You can just book rental cars and cancel it later by calling the car rental company.

Wonder if I can do the same with the hotel booking - call them direct and cancel? Then re-book direct via from the hotel to get the lower rate?

And of course, key to this would be AMEX NOT taking back the $200 credit from my account hehe - they said it should post tomorrow.

Just don't abuse it so that this remains as a viable option

PTS is asking me to sign the "Personal Travel Profile and Signature on File Form".
They won't give me the $200 credit until they receive the form.......

I didn't need to do it last year.
