$100 GC Purchased early July. Still no reimbursement.
Looks like they put the kibosh on that. Weird that it ever worked, considering those purchases are coded as Merchandise & Supplies - Internet Purchase.

I think they may have caught on with HA. I purchased a $63 GC - waited the famous 3 business days for reimbursement and NOTHING. Said okay, lets wait till the statement closes. Still - NOTHING!
Just changed preferred airline to Delta - purchased a $50 GC. Waiting for it to post then will wait a few days to see if it reimburses. Fingers crossed.

Gift card purchases are still not getting reimbursed.
Heres what worked for me:
10/4 $79.83 airfare paid $50 gift card and $29.83 to Amex biz plat
10/6 $29.83 airline fee reimbursement
10/8 $103 airfare paid with $50 gift card and $53 to Amex biz plat
10/12 still waiting for reimbursement

It looks like only charges under $50 are automatically reimbursed. Charges $50 and above have to manually done . I was able to have a rep manually apply the $53.
Additional charges I've made paid partially with GCs
2x $29.80 11/10 reimbursed 11/14
$44 on 11/18. reimbursed 11/21.
$57 on 11/18. No amount was reimbursed.

GC purchases will not work (coded as merchandise and supplies/Hawaiian Gifts). I purchased Hawaiian premier club and AMEX confirmed that they will reimburse (coded as travel-airline). $200 credit renews 1/1/18.

Can you provide more information? How much as the gift card you purchased for? When did you purchase it? When did you contact AmEx looking for a refund?

i bought 2- 50 gift cards and 1-70 gift card, purchased mid/late november around thanksgiving. i called dec10 and 11th asking for credit and told i wouldnt recieve any credit. called again on the 12th and got a more sympathetic agent who eventually did credit my purchases as a one time good will gesture as a valued customer.
