I booked a room using AMEX Travel Service and then ended up cancelling the room. 200 credit stayed on my account. Even if you book on your own normally call AMEX, book a room (they only do full refundable rates) and then call the hotel to cancel. Bam $200!

Amex will book early bird specials (normally non-refundable) if you educate them on the availability and the price. Nonetheless, I like your idea

I know this is quoting an older post but I thought I'd provide an update.
I caled to cancel my AMEX plat today (annual fee applicable starting tomorrow).
AMEX said because of my history with them they could offer me the card at the standard 399 annual rate. This would still entitle me to all the new benefits of the 699 rate card. (same card, less fee). I didn't expect this. I told them if I could get some MRs then we could talk. She offered me 10K, I said let's not cancel.
I figure I can use the new 200 travel credit and then I get the card for 99 bones.

like I did, 1st day it kicks in (June 29?)
I'll use my 2013 $200 (in Jan/Feb 2013), and try to cancel after and go for some retention MR's

In that case trip changes won't really affect credits that've been applied. That sounds assuring and actually quite generous on Amex's part. ^

Amazed that people who carry a 700$/yr travel card don't rent car/fly/hotel for $200 to use this as it was intended??

Did my first Amex travel booking for a hotel today and it was a great experience. Professional and got the confirmation right away. $200 annual credit should be applied to my account shortly and likely will be on the same statement as my annual fee so net $499. Next $200 in January

I recieved something in the summer saying the fee was going up including new benefits. Didnt look really hard except I did ask customer support about the new changes and they said I would get the travel credit after the June date even though I'd only paid 399 for the year.

Okay, so this goes along with the info that I got from the agent back in June where they actually can't raise the fee in the first year due to legal issue. But you still got the 10K extra. I might do the same with my card ending this Dec and I had been a cardmember since 1996 - hope this help me get more than 10K

I'm thinking of getting this card. Wondering if the $699 fee will count towards the 3k spend or not?
Anyone with insight?

$1000 in 3 months shouldn't be a problem for anyone willing to fork out 699 for a card.
