sorry to ask this as I doubt anyone can answer but worth a try. any idea when a conversion of MR points to BAEC avios with a bonus will come around? it has been a while since the last one?

I am basically trying to decide if I wait or cash in the MR's now and cancel my card for a pro rota refund......

any advice appreciated

Depends on how many points you have and how much is your monthly fee per month (if it is Amex Platinum about $40 a month or $15 if it is PRG). So, if you have 50K MR points, I will say it's worth waiting. A 30-50% bonus should be coming up soon!!!

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to miles and points so please don't be too harsh :-) ... Through college, I had used just a basic Capital One 1% Cash Back card to build up credit, but now I'm more interested in miles and travel. In February, I got the AMEX PRG card with the 50,000 miles bonus and have those sitting in my account now. I want to transfer those miles to BA Avios points and take advantage of the BOS-DUB Aer Lingus deal in late July. The two issues I'm dealing with are: 1). I want to hold out on transferring from AMEX to Avios for any potential transfer bonuses (from what I've gathered, it's been a while); 2). I want to book the flight early enough to secure two seats on the plane (any class works for me, my girlfriend and I are too young to be picky).

Would it be advisable to book ASAP or perhaps wait i.e. Late May (60 days prior) before making the booking to hold out hope for a transfer bonus. Thanks all.

To follow up, from my homework on ExpertFlyer, there is award space for the flight I'm eyeing from BOS - DUB, but not the return. Luckily, BA offers one way reward redemption so I will take advantage of that.

Just did the BOS-DUB flight with Avios points (gotten via MR) a couple weeks ago myself. Since you're flying in July, seats may be harder to come by than at other times of year, so it's good to have a backup plan and especially to be flexible on your travel dates if possible.

I don't use ExpertFlyer myself, but have heard reports that their availability doesn't exactly match what is available to BA (i.e. sometimes BA may not have access to seats showing on ExpertFlyer, and sometimes they may have access to seats that aren't showing on EF), so before making any decisions it is probably best to call BA and confirm the availability or lack thereof.

When booking my trip I did call BA several times to check availability on various dates/classes/cities and it seemed to fluctuate a bit. So if your preferred dates aren't available now, or if only one seat is, it's worth calling back a few days later and seeing if that has changed.

If your outbound date is currently available but not your return, and you're relatively sure that you want to book the outbound with Avios regardless, you could go ahead and transfer half your MR points now, book the outbound, and hedge your bets a little. Leave the other points in MR until a) a transfer bonus comes up, or b) your preferred return dates become available.

Is there anyone else in your family who can apply for a Gold card?

Refer them from your Plat and get 12k MRs for the referral, then if they spend 2k on the card within 3 months they get 22k MRs.

You can transfer all of your MRs into their account for a one-off fee of 15. Cheaper than waiting.

Yep, I transferred 115k to BA this week. Award availability was running out. Still need to transfer another 45k so I'm still hoping for one.

It is possible Membership Rewards bonuses with frequent flier programs are essentially over. It's generally understood that transfers to Airline miles cost American Express more per point than much of the other stuff Amex encourages you burn MR points on. Given that they'd rather you not redeem your points at all and especially not for what costs them the most (airline programs) it's quite possible the bonuses got out of hand and in fact cost Amex some serious money they weren't prepared to pay out. This article quotes Ken Chenault, Amex CEO explaining how the last quarter profits in 2012 were halved. The single largest reason for the decline was an uptick in Membership Rewards points redemptions which cost Amex $342 million.

I don't think we'll see one until the end of the year. I think there are too many high MR balances, and Amex are waiting for people to give in and cash them at 1:1 before offering bonuses.

Happy to be proved wrong, but its been suspiciously quiet.

Where is your Amex based?
BA transfer rate in ICC amex is 3 Rewards points for 2 BA Miles....
So if you want cheaper BA miles you can transfer the rewards points 1 x 1 to Iberia and free move them to your BA account.

Sorry for my bad english.
