Reminder: you must enroll and select Southwest as your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase.
Some have suggested the need to wait several hours or even a day before making the purchase, but there are also several DPs that worked without waiting that long.

(BTW, you will often hear people refer to Southwest as WN. WN is the IATA code for Southwest Airlines. SW is the IATA code for Air Namibia.)

Caution: As of late July 2019, reports are that direct gift card purchases are no longer being reimbursed.
To purchase click here: https://www.southwest.com/gift-card/create-card.html Caution: Do NOT login to your Southwest Rapid Rewards account when making the purchase.

What does appear to work is buying flight tickets less than $100, OR using gift cards to get the charged amount down to less than $100.

Always read the last few pages to get up-to-date DPs.

No credit

Purchased two tickets under $100 on 17th of this month, and my meter hasn't budged after 5 days. Getting nervous now.

EDIT: Both were credited on 11/22

did you delete the details by accident? would be nice if you gave us a date/amount breakdown because your comment contains nothing.

appreciate the info. thats very interesting. havent seen too many DPs of new ticket "additional fare difference" being credited.

so in the future, if you bought a ticket for $150 (no credit), but reissue the ticket for something more expensive - $200, the fare difference of $50 being charged would get credit? that would make sense. even more surprising $11 worked. thats very low.

yea dude. you always gotta trust but verify and do thorough research via multiple DPs.

Starting to get a bit nervous as well. Have the Aspire $250. Purchased ticket for ~90 posted on 11/18. Still no movement on credit meter. Wanted to test before attempting to utilize the rest. When I look at the display of the charge it lists "Document Type: PASSENGER TICKET". To those who successfully received reimbursement, is the charge listed the same?

Seems like based on other posts that I have a few more days before I should actually worry.

I bought a $92 ticket on 11/15, meter moved late in the evening of 11/20 and credit posted to account 11/21. I was worried for a couple days too.

Yeah they all say the same. You should see the credit in a day or two. I'm just scared Amex might clawback all these credits down the road because it's clearly a ticket purchase.

Changed airline on Platinum & Gold cards to WN from AA via online chat on 11/14. (Had a balance of $189.01 and $57 respectively on both cards that was previously used).

NOV20 Southwest Airlines - DALLAS, TX $$88.98

NOV20 Southwest Airlines - DALLAS, TX $$88.98

NOV22 Southwest Airlines - DALLAS, TX $93.98 (I purchased a 3rd ticket on Amex Gold Account).

Meter hasn't moved and no credit yet as of 11/25 on either card.

Note, on Amex website these show up as airline ticket purchases as indicated in the screenshot I included. I’m getting nervous that this may not work. Thoughts???

Success here too...
  • Nov 19 - Selected Southwest (WN) as my airline for Hilton Aspire card
  • Nov 19 - Immediately purchased one way ticket for $86 on Southwest.com (I know some reports said to wait a few hours, but it seemed safe to proceed)
  • Nov 20 - Charge posted for $86, clearly marked as "Passenger Ticket" with flight details
  • Nov 23 - Meter moved
  • Nov 24 - Credit "AMEX AIRLINE FEE REIMBURSEMENT" posted for $86

Thanks everyone! Now to book a few more flights and use up the whole $250 credit.

I'm relieved that this works. I already have the Platinum card, and was worried that I wasn't making a smart decision adding on a Hilton Aspire card. My Platinum card is tied to American Airlines, and while I was able to use up the credit at the beginning of the year, I don't tend to check bags, pay for seat selection, or buy a lot of on-board food. I might switch that card over to WN next year as well.

AMEX GOLD:Here's my timeline so far:

Airline selected way back in July.
Bought a $85 one way on Nov 21,
processed on the Nov 22 (transaction detail vague, does not specify as airline ticket).
NOV 25: Still no credit and meter has not moved .

getting nervous but based on others timeline in this thread credit should post by mid week. fingers still crossed.

nice. appreciate all the info and DPs. your timeline was very useful. gonna assume everything looks good with amex credit in combo with WN cancel refund, but just be careful out there.
