Reminder: you must enroll and select Southwest as your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase.
Some have suggested the need to wait several hours or even a day before making the purchase, but there are also several DPs that worked without waiting that long.

(BTW, you will often hear people refer to Southwest as WN. WN is the IATA code for Southwest Airlines. SW is the IATA code for Air Namibia.)

Caution: As of late July 2019, reports are that direct gift card purchases are no longer being reimbursed.
To purchase click here: https://www.southwest.com/gift-card/create-card.html Caution: Do NOT login to your Southwest Rapid Rewards account when making the purchase.

What does appear to work is buying flight tickets less than $100, OR using gift cards to get the charged amount down to less than $100.

Always read the last few pages to get up-to-date DPs.

As of last week (and most likely still), yes. However, it should be in increments of less than or equal to $100. To be totally safe, you could max $99 a day, but I think I heard some people say $100 on the nose is fine. It is also not clear what would happen if you did more than one gift card in the same day (but certainly not in the same transaction), however, I would split them up between days to be safe (in case they decide to consolidate their reporting to amex or something).

I did $50x1 2 weeks ago, then $50x1 and $100x1 on the same day last week and all were reimbursed.

I ordered a $100 GC on the 22nd. Not sure when exactly it got out of "Pending" but it's labeled on the statement as the 22nd; I think it was probably the 24th before it actually posted. Reimbursement posted on the 25th. Just ordered another $100 today.

Anyone know if you purchase A+ rewards if they are refunded?

$200 Plat card benefit - buy SWA gift cards?

I had designated United as my airline for this year, but did not need to charge anything so far, and don't see having to pay for anything extra on United for the rest of the year.

My question is...can I switch my airline to Southwest and buy some gift cards from them? If I kept it to transactions like $30-40, do you think Amex plat would reimburse? I would then use them to buy SW air in the future. I know I can always use them...

Thanks

Moved your post into the WN reimbursement report thread. Scroll back just a few messages to see confirmation that you can buy Southwest giftcards.

There are reports that American Express will permit you to change the designated airline if you have not used any of the benefit in 2012, but officially changes were to be made in January. Ask nicely, don't mention giftcards.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I think I'll do some $50 credits and I'd never be dumb enough to tell AMEX that!
