Data Point.
AA 4 $50 online eGC's purchased last year - reimbursed automatically within 2 days, no problem.
This year - NJ residents not eligible for AA online GC's (apparently new NJ regs have forced AA to opt out of selling GC's to NJ residents, no I'm not kidding - I found out after inputting all necessary info and getting to the final clickthru, lol) - so, I decided to try 1 upg sticker ($30) for reimbursement. Charge processed on 1/16 - no reimbursement since charge posts as:

...and there you have it. No reimbursement for UPGs. BTW, here's the AA website jargon for refusal to sell the GC's to NJ residents:
"Based on recent Gift Card-related legislative action in the State of New Jersey that requires sellers of such products to report voluminous documentation with regard to our customers, we have regrettably elected to no longer sell or deliver Gift Cards to individuals in the State of New Jersey. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Your credit card has not been charged."
UPDATE: Well, I spoke to soon, lol. $30 credit received this morning. 5 more stckers to purchase...

My GC purchases of 1/17 (1 @ $100, 2 @ $50) have all been reimbursed today. If AMEX cuts off the GC spigot next year, then I'm canceling the card. $250 annual fee is fair given the AC benefits, but $450 with a useless $200 airline benefit is rotten deal.
