12,500 skymiles for keeping delta gold

I called to cancel my Delta gold when annual fee came due earlier this week. I had charged 3-7K on it and gotten around $150 worth of sync credits during the year. I was not passed to another representative. The one who answered my call spent some time explaining the free baggae benefit etc. When I said that wasn't enough to justify the fee she offered 12,500 miles no spending requirement. I accepted.

Data point: Upgraded from PRG to Plat last year (30k MR after $10k spend).

Just called and asked for any retention offers and was told they only consider a retention offer every other year. Therefore, they weren't in a position to offer me anything.

I think I'll use up my airline credit & then downgrade to a $0 fee card, and take a pro-rated annual fee refund (in order to keep my MR balance intact).

Did you ask about doing that? My understanding is that Amex won't allow product changes between charge and credit. And all charge cards have an annual fee.

denied for DL Gold retention offer, so just cancelled. Most cards I will call 3-4 times until I get something, but was not that concerned keeping this one so did not put a whole lot of effort into trying

Green card - I should have clarified though; $0 first year, $95 after that.

Out of interest, has anyone downgraded to this card, to then receive a new or upgrade offer to the PRG or Plat?

FYI yes, I noticed this just today in fact. Downgraded from Biz Plat -> Green maybe 1-2 months ago. Today while logged into my account I saw a banner ad offering 15k MR points after $5k spend to upgrade to Biz Gold. I believe there was also an additional $50 annual fee.

I passed on it, for what it's worth.

no tempting offers for me...

Plat Biz $450 AF posted this month and I am really challenging the value of this card for me. So I called and got nothing tempting at all, they offered to switch me in to:
-Gold 3-2-1 for $175 AF
-Blue 1 point per $1, 0 AF
-Green 1 point per $1, $95.
I reiterated how point sensitive I am and they absolutely had no bonus retention offers.

Had Plat since 2006 and used to spend a lot but recently down to 5k / yr. Probably will cancel on my next call if I don't get a more tempting offer.

EDIT 6/23/14- called again today planning to cancel and they finally came up w 10k points to keep it open. Its not much but something to help me consider it till the 2015 annual $200 airline fee credit kicks in. Still plat for now.

Called to cancel my Delta platinum card and got nothing, which is no surprise seeing as how I spent close to $0 on the card this past year.

I got ~$50 refund on my annual fee though. This was a pleasant surprise since I forgot that AMEX pro-rates annual fees.

Business Plat since 2004. 100K spend last year ; $28K so far this year. Called and asked about cancelling, they said OK let me x-fer you to credit dept. Got on with the person who obviously was from retention. He asked the reason and I said "competing card offers with high sign up bonuses". He tried to talk me into PRG and I said the AF isn't the problem, I am looking at Citi AA and Ink Bold with similar AF but great bonuses. FINALLY offered 25K MR which I took since I love my Plat anyway.

My recommendations if you are doing this: Know the reason(s) you are threatening to cancel and mention their competition. Give them a reason why they should keep you (I love the card, I don't mind the AF, I'm just too tempted by these 50-100K offers!) and after they try to get you to choose their preference I think you can get what you want.

Called to cancel my UK Business Plat and been a member since 2010. Wasn't transferred to anyone, but the agent who answered offered me double points on all my spend for 3 months. Was tempted, but closed the card as planned.

Had my PRG linked and had my existing points moved over to that.

Why not the full refund..?? did you cancel after the 60 day period..?? or am I just misinformed, and they don't give full refund even within the 60 day period..
