My first anniversary for the Plat AMEX was in a couple of days. I called to cancel and was offered a $100 statement credit to keep the card. FWIW, I charged under $5K on the card in the year I had it.

centurion retention
...I know on the centurion side there is either a CRM app, or a per-defined formula which tells a rep how many MR they can give out for customer service issues, and I suspect its at least partially based on spend. Not sure what the formula is but I got a nice un-rounded high 5 digit MR courtesy bonus in the last year.

Will be cancelling my wife's Platinum Amex 100%, and no bluff here.. If they offer to give her a retention bonus, I'm not too sure I'll sign up.. We certainly don't need two aeroplat Amexes

Worse case scenario you can always accept the bonus and cancel later on, within 60 days of getting hit with the $450 fee if need be. Although I am no ethics professor...

The points are in your Membership Rewards account, not attached to the specific card. Rules are here, read (2) and (3) to understand the difference between immediate and 30 day forfeiture:

I assume this means any Amex CC, not just an Amex MR charge card, right?

As long as you don't straight out say that you want to cancel the card (just say you are thinking about it because the fee is too high, etc) but are transferred to retention, it can't hurt. Of course, there is always the chance they will mess up and cancel without you speaking it out specifically, but not very likely.

My reading of the rules is that if you hold an American Express card which participates in another rewards program this will preserve your Membership Rewards balance for 30 days after you close your last Membership Rewards card. I believe the card would have to be one issued by American Express, not an Amex-network card issued by another bank.

so I have a GPR and want to upgrade to a Amex Plat because I lost airline elite and thus lounge access. I just liquidated my MR points (700 or so left). Would it work if I cancelled, then applied for the platinum to get the signup bonus. The whole keep your cardnumber thing is not very valuable to me since that card is only for discretionary big-ticket purchases anyway.

AMEX Premier Rewards Gold Card Retention Bonus
Hello all. Sorry if this is a duplicate post but just thought I would share the retention bonus that I received from AMEX.
I called to cancel my AMEX Gold today because the annual fee is just too high for the amount that I use the card. The agent went through his normal speach and then offered me either $135 to keep the card or 20,000 points. I chose the 20k points so I could reedem for a domestic flight.
Hope this is helpful!

Gonna try the same approach with the Biz card, though, and throw in my Chase Ink Biz card as leverage.

After clearing out my MR points that I had left I called to cancel my Amex Biz Plat. Member since 2006, had a few years of business spending that were in the $200k-$250k range, but the last two years were about $60k per year because I have shifted most of my spending over to SPG and Chase cards. Offered retention was a $50 statement credit. Had about a 10 min conversation with the rep about the benefits that have gone away and thought he would offer something better than that. Goodbye Amex Plat.

They may try to claim that in the T&C it is 30 days from posting or 60 days from applying, in hopes of keeping the fee, but if you put them on the spot and ask them where in T&C they will have no answer. Because it is not discussed anywhere; not pro-rating, not deadlines, not anything. There is not a word in T&C covering what happens to the fee if you cancel your card.
