Called up, asked for retentions, took a while to transfer...finally got someone on the line. Explained how I thought it was pretty sad that IHG was pulling out, and the loss of Continental given my Houston travel hurt. Flat out asked for a retention bonus to keep from switching to Chase Sapphire spend, and he just kept repeating "while we'd like to see you stay", then mentioned the airline credit and the lounge access (the only reasons for the card, really :P).

For reference, $25k spend last year (year of opening, with the 100k MR bonus). Never late. Not a thing for retention, he was definitely prepared to cancel the card then and there. I just got hit with my fee and have a ton of travel in the next 6 weeks, so looks like I'm holding onto it for a while more.

DL Reserve

I don't know if this should be included here, but it is an Am Ex. I called up about my DL Reserve and stated that I didn't feel that I was getting $450 out of the card, since that's the fee. The rest of the conversation went something like this. No, I didn't embellish this. I guess Am Ex reps know absolutely nothing about DL.

Agent: Let me place you on a brief hold while I see if there is anything else I can offer you instead.

Me: Ok, no problem. Thanks for looking into this for me.

Agent: Ok, so I've put together the best offer I can for you regarding Skymiles to help offset some of the annual fee for you. The best offer, which is a great offer, is...(drumroll in my head....) 500 Skymiles.

Me: 500 Skymiles? That's only worth about $5 of my $450 fee.

Agent: No, 500 Skymiles are worth $500.

Me: Do you mean 50,000 Skymiles? That would be worth $500.

Agent: No, I mean 500 Skymiles.

Me: Where do you get worth $500 then?

Agent: That's how much money you would have to spend to receive those miles. This offer is worth $500.

Me: I know, but to redeem them with DL, it's only worth $5. And I spend $500 on this card every 2 days or so as is.

Agent: That's the best offer, and I had to get that approved. If you want to value the offer at $5, I disagree with you, and think it's worth $500. We are saving you $500 with this offer, so you are actually making $50 with this offer. (I guess $500-$450??)

Me: Wow. (Thinking, but didn't say, that's a slap in the face to someone who spends with Am Ex 6 figures a year)

Agent: Do you want this offer or are you declining this offer? I just need to note your account.

Me: You can keep that offer and I'll call to cancel next month when my fee is due.

Agent: We hate to see you go if that's the case, but I think you're making a mistake turning down 500 Skymiles.

I couldn't even make this crap up. Unbelievable.

Unbelievable! I'd wait a month and call back. Maybe someone more competent will be available. Its one thing for them to tell you they can't offer much - a completely different thing to tell you 500 points = 500 dollars.

You should have asked if you could take a $500 statement credit in lieu of the points, since apparently 500 points = $500. Ha!

Success! (not much but something)

I wasn't planning on cancelling just played my cards to see what they'd offer.

I have:

Amex Gold Card
Amex Blue
Amex HHonors card

total of all cards I spend only $15k/year so nothing to write home about, but I've been a member since '97 (thanks to backdating-really since '03) and I told her I wanted to find out my options to cancel because I received notification from Priorty Club that they are ending their MR relationship (see: http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/pc/...rs/us/aexpress)

Needless to say this was my reasoning as it "devalues" MR for me, and she said I understand, and wanted to remind me that I have 80k points and that I need to spend them before I cancel so I don't lose them as that is worth $800 in gift cards.

I said ok sounds good i'll do that thank you, She then said "let me check one more screen here... paused a minute, came back and said "What I can also do for you since you've been a member since 1997 is offer you a $50 credit towards your annual fee in hopes you will stay with us, how does that sound?"

I said sure I'll take it. Not much but better than $0, $125 AF - $50 credit = $75, maybe I'll try every year to get a credit, I wonder if that will work ... 10 minute call, it was worth it, as I was considering doing a PC to Zync, but I'll stick Gold another year....

Hi,

I just got my $450 fee charge and figured it's time to call. Spent just under $110k on the card last year (mostly international as I travel a lot for work).

Talked to the first rep, said that I was looking at the Chase Sapphire card and was considering to switch. Was transfered to a retention specialist who was very nice, explained what I've been considering, mentioned the 40k signup bonus with Chase, etc. She tried to sell me on the Priority Pass, but since I also have Lufthansa Senator status, politely explained that I already have lounge access in most places. Next she reiterated the $200 airline fee reimbursement, which is useful to me, but only to limited extend.
After that, she said that I've been a valued customer and that they would like to offer me either 50k points or $400 statement credit. I took the 50k points and will stay with Amex for another year.

If you spent a ton, maybe. It can't hurt to ask. I've had success in the past getting some of the fee credited back or some MR points. It's been a while since I tried though.
