Really?

N.A. - Western Europe

Aeroplan 60/90/125K return

UA 30/50/67.5 one way

Aeroplan do charge YQ on most airlines for reward flights, though.

Most? There are 26 Star Alliance members. and if the list in the AC forum is accurate they only collect fuel surcharges of flights operated by ten:

  • AC
  • LH
  • NH
  • OZ
  • TG
  • OS
  • LO
  • TP
  • JP
  • SN

If I transfer MR to AC, would I have to pay that transfer fee Amex charges for transfers to US airlines? Also, what's the best transfer bonus that you can recall, and how often do they run them with AC? Thx!

No, Air Canada is not a USA-based airline.

I do not recall any AMEX transfer bonus to AC with my limited years with AMEX MR (~3 yrs). AEROPLAN does run convert bonus that the highest that I recall in recent years was transfer 150K get 40K bonus, so 26.67% bonus. But the last few convert bonus had expclude AMEX MR. It was first only AMEX MR US was excluded, then all AMEX MR (including Canada) was excluded too.

Pardon my stupidity, but do I take from this that your process is (or could be):

1. Search for awards available using Aeroplan points
2. When you find the award, call Aeroplan to book it.
3. Place Aeroplan on hold and call Amex, convert MR to Aeroplan points
4. Points appear in Aeroplan account immediately.
5. Aeroplan books the award.

Is that basically it? You are converting MR to Aeroplan 1:1 (in thousands, admittedly) without the risk of having the availability disappear after the MR points have gone over.
