"Domestic" Same Day Confirmed Flight Change (SDFC, SDC, CFC, and "Standby")
"AA Domestic" here includes Canada, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Caribbean

N.B. Different than "standby"; see link.

NOTE CHANGED POLICY: June 2018 - E class availability is not (or no longer) definitive on whether SDFC may happen. "Other" aspects may be taken in to consideration. Seems few other changes but it is now clear that passengers in domestic premium cabins can SDFC at no charge. More here: Guide: New SDFC / Same Day Flight Change Restrictions 8 Jun 2018

NOTE CHANGED POLICY: As of 15 January 2016 the SDFC option will be limited to alternate flights only if they follow the same origin, destination, and also SAME CONNECTION POINT. Other rules seem to be unchanged as far as available 24-hours before, no charge to CK, EXP or up to three companions on the same PNR, no co-terminals allowed, and slight overlap to calendar date limitation for late night may be possible. Domestic segments that are part of a domestic and international itinerary are generally not eligible.

NOTE 1 re upgrades: To effectively use SDFC you must call to downgrade first. If you SDFC successfully then, you may request an upgrade on your new flight.

NOTE 2 re Upgrades. On SDFC, for e500 or EXP UDU the original upgrade request time stamp remains on the upgrade request; with SWU, you will get a new time of request time stamp. (It's useful not to check in for ~10 minutes after you SDFC or you may find yourself in a pickle with upgrade requests.)

NOTE 3 re PreCheck / KTN: For an unknown reason, going on to SDFC May delete or eliminate your Known Traveler number for the record, so your PreCheck will likely not be granted. You'll have to call or have the ticket counter restore your KTN. (According to reports in May 2018, this does not seem to be a pervasive issue any longer).

N.B. This thread relates to AA "domestic" changes only, for international same day changes see this thread.

Same-Day Flight Changes
Did you know you can change your domestic flight† and get a confirmed seat for a $75 (non-refundable) charge? The option is available on all fares in the Main Cabin. For $75 you can confirm a seat on a different flight as long as the alternate flight:

1. Has the same origin AND destination
2. Is the same calendar day of departure
3. Has eligible seats available ("E" fare inventory for all fares)

We continue to offer the same-day stand by option for an earlier or later domestic flight for select customers at no charge. See above link for list of select customers.

We now have four convenient options to make same-day flight changes:
1. Online: Beginning 24 hours prior to departure, you can request a same-day flight change on aa.com through the check-in window. Just select each passenger who is requesting a flight change and pay the non-refundable $75 per passenger charge.

2. Over the Phone: Beginning 24 hours prior to departure, you can call Reservations and our agents will provide information for available flights departing on the same day as your original flight. The non-refundable $75 charge can be paid over the phone via credit card.

Once you arrive at the airport, you can check in for your new flight at Curbside Check-In, Self-Service Check-In, or our ticket counter.

3. At a Check-In Kiosk: Beginning 12 hours prior to departure, the Self-Service Check-In machines will provide a list of available flights for the same day as your original flight. Just choose the flight, pay the non-refundable $75 charge, and complete the check-in process. You will receive a boarding pass for your newly confirmed flight and a receipt for the charge.

4. At the Ticket Counter: Beginning 24 hours prior to departure, our agents can provide a list of available flights for the same day as your original flight. Just choose the flight and pay the non-refundable $75 charge. You will receive a boarding pass for your newly confirmed flight and a receipt for the charge.

Same-day flight changes are subject to Terms and Conditions.

†Available for flights in the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada and the Caribbean on American Airlines, American Eagle® and AmericanConnection®.

Nuances and Loose Rules
Now for the hard part: figuring out where the flexibility is in the rules. This list is compiled from the responses to people saying "Can I do X?" where X is something that is not clearly permitted by the rules. One's likelihood of success here depends a bit on the method used for the SDC. (Note: this is a work in progress and your contributions/corrections are appreciated!)

For each item, the following codes apply:
Y = possible using any method
A = possible using an agent (phone/counter), perhaps having to HUACA
A* = mixed reports of success with an agent (phone/counter)
N* = possible only if you find a very accommodating agent
N = little or no reported success.
  • Violating various non-routing fare rules (day/time, minimum stay, etc.): A* (see post 1020)
  • Change to flight with no E fares available (day/time, minimum stay, etc.): A* (see [http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/25099215-post1111.html"]post 1111)
  • Change routing with E avails but keep same number of connections, i.e BOS-ORD-LAX to BOS-DFW-LAX ??
  • Change destination to an entirely different place: N
  • Change destination to a co-terminal (e.g. LGA -> JFK): A* (see post 1081, post 1114 & this blog post )
  • Change destination to ultra-close airport non-coterminal airport (e.g. JFK-> LGA): ??
  • Change itinerary at the beginning to include illegal layovers (> 4 hours): A (1 of 1 getting an EP phone agent to create 8+ hr layover)
  • Change itinerary at the layover point (using kiosk, app, or agent) to create an otherwise illegal layover: ??
  • Change itinerary at the beginning to add a layover point not permitted by the routing rules: ??
  • Change itinerary at a layover point to add another layover not permitted (either in terms of number of segments or routing rules) by the routing rules: ??
  • Change to a flight exactly 24 hours before or after the original flight: ??
  • Change to a flight exactly 24 hours before the original flight, if the previous day's flight has been delayed: Y (based on one report)

I couldn't find an answer to my question in this thread (or elsewhere).

On a 3-class transcon, I have two options:
- booking F using AA miles (I'm AA Plat)
- booking F using Avios (I'm BA Gold)

I want to end up on an earlier flight that seems to be pretty wide open (ExpertFlyer shows F5), but is not available with either AA or BA miles.

If I book through BA, I understand I can standby for the earlier flight (but not SDC). Will I clear ahead of employees? Or it's any SWUs first, employees and then whatever is left for standby pax on (partner) award tickets?
If I book through AA, can I SDC as long as there are simply seats open T-24? Or do I need any special fare type to be open?

SDCF should look at the availabile inventories. AA awards on AA book into F, but BA awards on AA book into Z. Z inventory typically opens up close to departure but no guarantee.

My experience attempting to SDFC in Transcon F

I tried again just now and I see an option to switch to the 8am flight. Which seems odd since it's already after 8am. Today's 8am flight departed on time. It seems that it's giving me the (only) option to switch to tomorrow's 8am flight. As if it's determining "same day" based on date of arrival vs. date of departure.

A random quirk? A known issue that I just don't know about?
I noticed the same thing on the website but not the app. On the app it correctly showed me same day options (although all standby), on the website it was showing me options for the next day. It’s not clear that the website options are next day, except that they don’t start showing up until the departure time has already passed for the current day.

I called in and agents only saw what I saw on the app - standby only, no options for SDFC.

One of the benefits of the high frequency between JFK and LAX is the enormous flexibility I’ve always enjoyed in main cabin. I’m actually really excited to fly F, though. It’s not something I prefer to give up. That said, if I am willing to accept a downgrade to get home early, what’s the smartest way to do this — assuming that SDFC in F isn’t available?

For example, any chance I could get a credit back for the fare difference? Or is that only possible if I go ahead and make the change to my ticket in advance?
Gate agents can downgrade you to Main (business is nearly always 100% full), they won’t give you any compensation for a voluntary downgrade. You could reprice paid tickets or cancel/rebook award tickets, both at the current price, online or with a reservation agent, you are very unlikely to get a gate agent to help you do this.

I have come to the conclusion that F (on transcons at least) is no longer an easy SDFC. Most flights were pretty open several days before departure, but all filled up to just 1-2 seats within 1-2 days of departure. I think they are filling these cabins with cheap upgrades and awards as it gets closer. They are also NOT opening up any seats for SDFC in advance. A few standbys will likely clear at the gate, but you can’t count on it. In my case, the gate agent was incompetent and rude, cleared me (PP) but not my companion (no status) on the same PNR, clearing another passenger after me. I ended up giving up my seat and waiting for our original flight.

Silly newbie question: If I were to book LAX-MIA-XXX on one of the non-widebodies, would it be possible to SDFC to one of the widebodies? (AA having routes where "some flights are Flagship, some aren't" isn't something I'm used to...with DL it is generally all or nothing, or the widebodies are simply a chance for a nicer-than-usual ride.)

So confused. Sorry for not reading up on this…getting ready to take off on flight from LHR. Will most likely miss my onward flight (booked on separate ticket). My onward flight is booked in domestic first. I’ve submitted a standby request for later flight via app. I’m first on the standby list. Does that mean first for any seat for for first?

They clear upgrades before they clear standby. And everyone who has any status at all is eligible for a complimentary upgrade.

So, yes, you are first on the standby list for first class, but by the time they get to that list first class will almost certainly be full.

So, if you can't do a confirmed change, you will almost certainly end up in economy.

If there are cheap awards available (there often are domestically, even last minute) you might be better off cancelling your ticket and rebooking the flight you want in economy with miles. Assuming you have status, you will have a better chance of ending up in F. Particularly if your F ticket was expensive, you might save some money.

Flying LHR - JFK, overnighting in JFK and then JFK-LAX-SMF, all one itinerary and returning the same way. Currently on the 0600 from JFK due to availability. Booked in business. Due to timings I have a 5hr layover at LAX that I’m looking to reduce. So ideally I’d be on a later flight.

In case it matters, it’s a 125 ticket issued by BA, and the JFK - LAX flight is a BA code.

- to do a same day flight change, does there have to be availability in a specific fare class?

- presumably the connecting flight to SMF won’t cause any issues? Similarly the fact that it is an international itinerary overall?

- my understanding is that business class fares don’t get charged a fee for same day changes? Is there any fare repricing?

Pretty basic questions (I think). Wife is EP and flying to visit a friend in Denver in January from here in Philly. The return leg, the night flight mileage ticket is only 7,000 compared with 27,500 for the day one.

If she books the night flight can she still SDFC to the earlier flight even though it is a mileage ticket?

Also, if she happens to clear a comp upgrade before the SDFC does that change anything?

Is there any benefit booking this cash as opposed to with miles??

Thanks and sorry for all the questions!!

I was looking to book a flight from SJU -CLT-PHX with an overnight connection in CLT, with the CLT-PHX leg leaving in the morning. If I were to SDFC the first leg to CLT and get there early enough, would I be able to fly standby on the second leg that night? It wouldn't technically be "same day" but would be within 24 hours.

I was told by an agent on the EXP line that AA suspended SDFCs around Christmas time and haven't reinstated this. Is this true?

I'm a BAEC Gold/OWE. AA185 is the last JFK-LAX of the day. Is it possible to do an SDFC to another flight the following day or even take the following day's AA185? Or AA is going to ask me to take out the wallet?

If I'm taking AA1415 and plans change, space permitting, will I be able to do a free SDFC to the last flight of the day, which would be AA1434.

Must be departing on the same calendar day, so your only option on AA185 is to swap to an earlier flight.

What about AA1415 with AA1434?

That shouldn't be an issue. It'll cost you some money unless you're full fare Y, business or first.
