The analogy would be that I'm lifetime gold with UA because of my million BIS miles on them. Even though I don't fly UA anymore, I'd like LH to match that status, just because. I doubt that would happen either.

Another issue none of us has mentioned yet, it's impossible to maintain any status on AA without flying four segments annually on AA (or US, as long as the airlines don't fully merge).

Without more details, good advice is tough. For all we know the relative is moving to the US and will have a high AA spend. Without the information, hard to tell.
