Thanks, to all; clearly, it's a question of AA putting the big print policy ("some places" don't allow "box"es) up front, while making the small print policy (WHICH places) less than obvious...
Anyone found the list of places with such restrictions?

Never had issues transporting boxes domestically. Recently shipped two litigation boxes of materials to Chicago and no issues at all taking them with me.
