Forced layover

Hi,
We had our 6 am flight from Indy to Miami was delayed so we wouldn’t make our connecting flight to Quito. We would have a short layover, like an hour.
They booked us tomorrow for the 6 am flight but now we have a nine hour layover. We were wondering if that would be a case where AA should provide a voucher but I’m guessing not.

But they should reimburse us for our extra night at the airport hotel and our meals, right? The agent said all they could do for us was rebook but their policy says otherwise.

Thanks!

They should book the hotel for you as well, getting reimbursed is much more difficult since they don't exactly pay above their negotiated rate.

You booked an international itinerary with a 54 minute layover on the "busiest travel day of the year". Poor planning. Flying to Miami the day prior would have been a better option.

Regardless, what exactly is AA going to pay for? Why didn't you fly to Miami? The flight to Miami was delayed, and not cancelled?

Not what I would've done but AA sold them this connection and failed due to a fault of their own and they should indeed comp the room and meals.
OP at IND in the morning I would ask (might have to push & demand) to be put on the standby list on the earlier Quito flight, the one with the 1h layover. They will say standby needs to be on the app, etc. but you should remind them you are an involuntary delayed/displaced passenger. The agent should put you on the standby list and ensure you are coded as a delayed passenger so you are higher. Do not wait to MIA it will be too late.

AA sold a 54 minute layover on the "busiest travel day of the year". Poor planning. Having a 180min minimum connection time requirement on every itinerary that day would have been the better option for AA sales!

comp a hotel where--- in Indy? AA won't reimburse for that. They may give you meal vouchers during your 9 hour layover. I'd ask for that.

Did you purchase trip insurance ? If so, you can file your claim there.

Wait, what? What is all this about June 26 being the busiest travel day of the year?

APFrench was off by one day.

Here's what it's like to fly on the busiest travel day of the year (so far)

The Transportation Security Administration said that although Thursday had the most flights scheduled, it was anticipating higher passenger volumes through its checkpoints on Friday.

“The peak travel day will be Friday, June 28, when the agency expects to screen more than 3 million individuals,” a statement from the agency said. “TSA is staffed to meet its wait time standards, which are 10 minutes and under in TSA PreCheck lanes and 30 minutes and under in standard screening lanes. Seven of the top 10 busiest travel days ever have occurred over the past month.”

Since its founding, the TSA has yet to screen 3 million or more passengers in a single day across the nation’s airports.

I was tempted to ask the same question, but was feeling somewhat embarrassed that I didn't know:D. Anyway, the "so far" qualifier certainly deflates the excitement quite a bit, regardless of whether we're talking about the 26th, 28th, or any other date relatively close to July 4.

According to the TSA press release, on Sunday, June 23, was the record for most people ever screened on a single day, 2.99 million individuals. That record was expected to be surpassed on Friday, June 28.

AA's the one who banks their hubs.

APFrench Jul 2, 2024 8:58 pm

Our trip insurance reimbursed us. I had forgotten we had taken it out, we don’t always. Thanks!
