Changing a flight
 

I have a 2 part question. If I cancel a jal award ticket do they come back to inventory. If it doesn't would for example if my flight from ord to hnd with long stopover then to hkg would aa would just to be able the second leg and if not would anything happen and could I get my bags back if I don't take the hnd -hkg leg?

There's never any guarantee that a cancelled award will go back to award inventory. That goes for all carriers, not just JL.

You can try calling AA to see if they can just drop the HND-HKG segment and reissue your award without having to cancel everything and start over.

Otherwise how long is your connection in HND? If it's a long overnight connection then your bag should only be checked to HND, grab it when you land in Tokyo then pull up your reservation at aa.com and cancel it, which will remove you from the HND-HKG flight.

But if it's a same day connection your bag will be tagged to HKG, you could try contacting the JL baggage office when you land, let them know you're not taking the last flight, and ask them if they can retrieve it. No idea how long this would take or how much of a PITA it would be.

18 hours and a overnight, I was reading somewhere that jal automatically checks it to the final destination under 24 hours and any chance I could get back the 10k points that it cost extra if I cancel the last leg?

Given that it's an overnight 18 hour connection I highly doubt it will be any problem for JL to check your bag only to HND. However that would ultimately be up to JL policy so you may ask over on the JL forum.

The only way you will get the 10k miles back is if you can get AA to change your award beforehand to just ORD-HND. If you keep the award as-is and just cancel the HND-HKG segment once you arrive in Tokyo then the miles would not be refunded.

is that accurate because aa claims that only once i get there i could get miles back once i land there but not before the trip starts?
