Welcome to the 2024 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)

MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.
Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

We're glad you've chosen to join the Flyertalk frequent flyer community!

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:
Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:
Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)

IME it does take about a week from the time the activity posts that puts you over 60k, to the time that the bonus is live and working in your account.

Of course keep in mind that the 60% bonus is only on certain activity, not everything.

Yes, WiFi is available. It varies by length of flight. I would guess somewhere between $40 and $50 for the duration of the flight.

Please forgive me as I am a new to AA and the rules regarding access to the Flagship Lounge aren't that clear to me given the research that I have done. I already am a paid AC member but would like to use the FL on two separate flights this September. Both flights are fully paid business class fare DFW-LHR and DFW-FRA. Am I good to go to use the FL?
Thank you for your input.

Yes, you would have access to the FL at DFW with a Business Class booking. You would also have access to the AA Arrivals Lounge and the First Class Lounge at LHR and the JAL Sakura Lounge at FRA.

Am i able to credit one leg of a PNR to AA, while crediting another to BA?

Example: JFK --> LHR --> AMS // EDI --> LHR --> EWR - i want to credit the Outbound to AA FF#, and the return to BA FF#.

I need the two BA flight credits to hit my 4 qualifying flights.

You could probably change this mid-trip by tweeting in. I would do this after the LPs post, assuming you have enough time. Note - Ive never done this so others may need to weigh in.

Yep, you have access because of your paid business fares.

Interested in a mid tier status comparison between AA and DL, say AA plat vs DL gold. The biggest difference I see right off the bat is confirmed main cabin extra at booking on AA but still gotta wait to 72 hrs or less before flight for their comfort plus product, which means if you're traveling with someone you may not know if you'd even get to sit together!

Since I fly mostly out of SFO where United has a practical monopoly (and from what I've heard near impossibility on upgrades, even sometimes for 1K's), I've been work ing on status for AA (will easily hit plat and could hit plat pro with a bit of work) mostly thru shopping and hotels, and DL just by holding the two top Amex DL biz cards. This is so I can take a year or two trying both out and seeing which one I consitently get better value from when it comes to flying. (All that said I suspect having access to elite benefits on AS will likely be a tie breaker as they have good options out of SFO, but I do appreciate how many more options there are for earning and maintaining status with AA vs DL)

While I'm generally familiar with the prevailing opinion on the soft and hard products, at least for most domestic options, between AA and DL, basically because I had to put tons of spend on the Amex Delta Reserve biz card this year, I have the option to open a third (yikes!) Amex DL card, likely a personal plat, and then with a couple DL flights I have lined up I'd only have to then spend a bit more on the Amex to hit gold (whether I want to then indefinitely keep 3 DL cards open AND earn at least $2500 MQD each year to maintain is another story). This would allow me to spend a year taking a few flights on both airlines and get a sense for the quality of status benefits on both.

Anyone else done a similar experiment and learn anything the hard way, either from SFO or a similar non-AA hub with the hope of having higher upgrade odds?

Maybe I missed it, but how often are you traveling and generally to where? Are you paying for F or generally Y?

It seems like aiming for PPRO makes the most sense to take advantage of Alaska benefits. And, OWE benefits are much better than ST Elite Plus. It also seems like you can obtain DL Gold by virtue of the MQD boosts from the cards and a few flights (silver at a minimum).

AAs options out of SFO have dwindled, but the AS aspect is a big plus.

Soooo, here is a real scenario I am trying to size up. Two families starting their round trip travel from different cities.

Family 1 Segment 1 is SNA-MIA-NAS. MIA-NAS is same day but earlier than Family 2
Segment 2 is NAS-MIA-TPA. Entire segment is same as Family 2
Segment 3 I TPA-PHX-SNA
All 3 segments are one way Main Cabin revenue booked through a 3p OTA. No AA status

Family 2. Segment 1 is TPA-MIA-NAS
Segment 2 is NAS-MIA-TPA
Both segments are a single round trip booking Basic Economy booked direct with AA. Family 2 has an AA Plat Elite.

Is it possible to get Family 1 Segment 1 and 2 linked up with Family 2's corresponding segments in order to share elite benefits, specifically seat upgrades and priority benefits.

The only requirement to get companions seated next to an elite in MCE/preferred seats is just to be on the same flight in the same cabin. You have never needed to be on the same reservation.

So it's no problem to call AA and get everyone seated together for no fee on segment 2 NAS-MIA-TPA. But this is not possible for segment 1 since they are on different flights.

The seating benefits are the only thing that carries over. The other family will still have to pay for bags. They will also still be in group 9 boarding but with AA you can typically just board together, just let the GA know as you pass by.
